Are negative rep points "logged" by mods??

I ask because I have recently been chided by a well-meaning poster (a newbie, BTW, only been here less than a month) who has decided to make a game out of giving me rep points. He starts off by at first tossing me a positive rep point, and then turning around and giving me negative one with the specific intent of negating the positive one he gave me a moment ago. He feels it's "no harm no foul" because it's all just done in sillyness, and as far as sheer math goes he isn't impacting my reputation score at all.

My concern is that maybe one of the things the AW mods might be doing as a matter of procedure is keeping tabs on when a poster starts accumulating a huge tally of negative rep points. Like maybe such posters might be trouble makers in need of some quiet observation and maybe even eventual warnings and/or bannings. So if this newbie poster I am refering to keeps playing this game with giving me neg/pos rep points, maybe I'll be hitting some "list" here at AW of the sort I would prefer not to be on.

And personally, I want to state that of the HUNDREDS of rep points I have handed out since I've been here at AW, I think IIRC, that I myself have only ever given out ONE negative rep point, and she is a fiendishly reprehensible poster who has been here for well over two years now, has about 1,000 posts, and her reputation score is STILL languishing in the realm of just being "on a distingished road" (so she hass less than 50 positive rep points I believe). So my own regard of negative rep points is that they should be used only with the utt most fear and caution and only when the poster really really "deserves it." I do not at all veiw neg rep points as a "game." Now I can't force this other poster to see things my way, but perhaps the answer to this question of mine will prompt a polite but stern PM request from me to this other poster to cease and desist.

Any mods out there got an answer to this?

Mods don't deal with rep points at all, only complaints via PM or reported posts. Rep points are a novelty for the users.

ETA: That's not an invitation to neg rep this post, Cray.

someplace around here, anyone seen my keys?
No, we don't log or track them - they're considered private, but if they're being abused we (supermods and admins) have tools to delete them for you. And I personally don't feel that kind of activity by a member is acceptable - it's up to you to decide if you'd like one of us to have a little chat with him.

I'll check back here. I considered my approval or disapproval to be more or less inconsequential. So if I have permanantly scarred someone, is there a way to revoke a too-hasty minor pique?

Thanks. While I was asking, my question was being answered.

I might just send a PM to that poster and include a link back to THIS very thread. And politely ask him to re-assess his usage of negative rep points. If he gets all weird on me, THEN perhaps mod-intervention will be needed.

(And in case anyone is wondering: No, it is NOT the newbie poster named "Chase" who has posted in this thread already. ;) )

Well, the other mods have answered succinctly, but I am sorry you're being harassed this way, PD, and I echo Dawno in saying you or anyone should feel free to take this kind of problem to a Supermod or Admin. It's the abusive giving of negative rps that's a bannable offense.

Personally, I wish we didn't even have such a thing. If people have a problem with someone, they should take it up with them in a PM, or report the post if it's that reprehensible, and let the Mods/Admin deal with it.

Thanks, Pat, that's all good information. :)

Meanwhile, I don't believe this person's intention is to harass me. He is naively thinking it's just a silly game and that it's a way to "bond." He is SOOOOOOO NEW to AW that he just doesn't have a clue. To me that's entirely forgiveable. He just needs to be enlightened and then I'm sure if he's a reasonalbe person he will ammend his ways, no one but he and I will have to know, and then we can all get on with things.

But if he's a psycho, he'll immediately reveal himself to be exactly that. And THEN you betchyer sweet laptop I'll be hitting "report" and getting the mods involved.

It's well known that mods monitor all rep points as well as all PMs. I have it on good authority that they are working on a system to monitor your traffic on other boards as well.

All right. All right. As per request of the two AW moderators in trench coats who visited this morning:

I apologize to the three posters I disapproved. I agree to approve them twice the next time they stray off topic.

I am 66 1/2, not just the 66 as posted. I was hoping writing in a more upbeat, "with it" manner would fool some.

So I don't live in the trendy writers' tenements of downtown Albany. I have arthritis, and I thought the angst would be comparable here in East Albany's flashy suburbs.

I only passed my GREs with a 51 percentile, not the 100th as my sly, pointed wit and perfect use of commas implies.

Please return my cat.

*Marks Mod calendar to check back on Chase in a few months when he turns 66.6 to see if he turns into the AW Antichrist*

Between a rock and a hard place.
How do you find out what your number of rep points makes you? You know, "mage" "moron" or whatever? I didn't know there were classifications.

Hover your mouse beneath your post count number and you should see the comment appear in a yellow box next to your mouse.

ETA: I can only get it to work about half the time.

awatkins is so great we've run out of appropriate compliments!

The invisible "hot spot" to reveal your place on the circle of life is roughly under the "o" in "Posts:" and can be rather elusive sometimes.

The "Absolute Sage" moniker is awarded to those with expert knowledge who go out of their way to share their skills and guide other members.

The "Super Moderator" moniker means I can use the executive bathroom, but only on Tuesdays. Yes the taps are gold.

"Moderator" is roughly the equivalent of Orcs, whipping the goblins through the gates of Mordor.

That's how it was explained to me anyway.

In the scheme of all things, rep points are meaningless. Go visit the Obsessive Rep Point Checkers Club and hang out for a few weeks. You'll have over 1000 rep points before you know it.

That's okay...they've run out of good stuff to say about you, anyway. ;)

It isn't about cheating. It's simply the fact that rep points aren't that important. Neither are post counts, incidentally.

What is important is that you enjoy yourself and learn. If a person likes to give out rep points that's part of being in the community. There are many people here who don't have high rep/post counts, but give excellent information.

If it's anyone else (like Joan Jett or Diana Ross or whoever) the similarity to Michael Jackson is absolutely creeping me out.
PD, it's Joan Jett, I thought it was kinda funny how the bright light and motion erased her nose, but I'm duty-bound as a moderator to respond to your creepy complaint! That's how highly we think of you and every member!

I traded my rep points to Birol. She gave me magic beans in return. I'm gonna plant them in August when the frost's out of the ground.*

*Totally fibbing. Frost leaves in July.
