I had an old short story that I wrote a fwe years back. I submitted it around and got rejections all around. I stumbled across it recently and read it over (it was really bad) i rewrote and have submitted it to a few places and, although they were still rejections, they were not form rejections. Most of them talking about how well written it was but not quite right for them.
My question is, can I resubmit the story to the places that originally rejected it? (the places i think would fit the story best)
If so should I mention that I rewrote the story, or should i just resubmit it and see what happens/
Thanks in advance.

If it has been a few years and you have done a major rewrite, then it really isn't the same story any more and I would not see a problem with sending the new revised version to some of the same markets that rejected it before.

I agree with johnnysannie. If it has been a couple of years, it should be fine to resubmit. As long as you believe the rewrite is substantial enough.
Don't tell them you rewrote the story. Just resubmit.

maybe consider a title change, too. just a thought.

Good idea. Some editors keep records with author/title for all their submissions.

And as a side-note: One time I pulled an old essay out of the files I keep, dusted it off, reworked it a little, retitled it, and resubmitted it. Guess what? One of the original mags I had submitted it to, liked it this time around and published it. So there you go!
