Here's the scene: a 45-year-old blacksmith (male), a 17-year-old recreational football player (male), and a 27-year-old weaver (female) are being held captive.

The weaver is pretending to cower in fear against the wall opposite the cell door. The teenager will be hidden by the door when it opens. The blacksmith is on the other side of the door.

Four captors enter the cell to grab one of them for torture and execution. First in is a 45-year-old female, second are two middle-aged males, all 3 are reasonably fit (nothing special). The last is a short, fat male (the easy target).

1. Can the weaver knock out or make woozy the fat man with a punch to the gut, then a right hook to the chin?
2. Can the teenager knock out the woman with a blow to the chin?
3. Can the blacksmith knock out or make woozy the first man with one or both fists to the back of the head?
4. (Saw this done several times on Life on Mars and want to use it.) Can the blacksmith and teenager together knock out or make woozy the fourth man by together punching him in the face?

Thanks, all you fighting types! This is the crucial 3rd-disaster scene. The teenager and farmer will escapem the blacksmith will linger a moment to make sure the woman is okay (they used to be lovers) and there's a fifth person lurking who will hit the blacksmith, giving the others time to get up and drag him off to be tortured. The first two MUST get away to stage a rescue later on.

Forget the chin, go for the nose. The teenager could easily take the woman with a single punch to the face. As for the fat man, forget the gut, he won't even feel it. Go for the nuts , then the nose. The blacksmith is very muscular, so he can take anybody any way he wants to.

I agree. In the bar (not that we EVER have fights) its the straight punch to the nose that staggers the one who's hit. You might also want to consider a punch to the temple from your blacksmith for maximum effect.

A good way to make someone feel woozy is to clap both their ears, hard. you wouldn't think so, but it is. A big, strong teenager could do that to the guy from behind.

If there is the opportunity for them to think about it then it would be better for either the weaver or the teenager to use their elbow/forearm rather than fist. More solid power and it hurts your hand less.

Wouldn't the football player do what he knows best, shoulder 'em into each other, knocking 'em off-balance and driving them into the door or wall so the others can rush forward and take advantage? The blacksmith, with his big brawny shoulders and arms, would maybe hammer-pound 'em to the floor with his fists rather than go for subtlety, a downward fist to the back of the head or neck can stun nicely. And if the blacksmith gets one of them in a headlock I'd expect his strength would decide the issue in seconds. How sharp are the weaver's fingernails? Raking someone's eyes is sure as heck gonna slow 'em down. Ditto throwing dirt into their eyes, or anything that comes to hand. Using their natural attributes, rather than trying to coordinate a fist-fight.

possibly, Derek. My idea for the scene is to have all 4 semi-conscious or unconscious as quickly as possible. I don't want a long fight. That's why I wanted all 4 bad guys in the room and then each good guy take out one bad guy and gang up on the 4th--wham, wham, wham, wham.

I like the shoulder-into-wall idea. It would definitely work.

Thank you!

How about the weaver kicking the shins, forcing the guy back into, or slowing them down for, one of the others to sort out?

Unless the weaver had some strength and power from somewhere I might be put out by her fighting too much.

Heal of the palm at an up-angle on the nose, or at the base of the chin won't damage even a weak hand much. Results vary, but are generally bad.

You need to come over to my house and watch some Ultimate Fighting Championship, Lily! A blow to the nose can incapacitate someone but usually won't knock them out. A blow to the jaw, especially if the person's mouth is open can easily knock someone senseless or unconscious. Spinning backfists are wicked. A good one to the temple will knock someone out cold. Knocking someone to the ground and having their head ricochet off the floor will knock them out. Elbows can be especially nasty, but you have to be close to someone to use them.

Yeah, these are cool moves for trained fighters, but not so applicable for a 17-year-old football player, a weaver-woman and a smith! :)

Forget the fists ... if you want to disable someone, kick their knee backwards just as they lift the other foot to take a step. They fall, screaming and clutching their knee.

Nobody's mentioned the groin shot!

I would have thought the female at least would go for that. Doesn't matter how big/fit/muscly the guy is, it's going to make him stop a moment. And while he's bent over going 'oooooowwww' you whack him on the back of the head and / or knee him in the nose.

As the saying goes, 'One quick knee in the happy sacs he'll drop like anyone else'

oh and III is right -watch some UFC. You'll get some great ideas. My warrior throwing someone through a table was based on me watching Triple H in the WWE do a spinebuster....

1. Can the weaver knock out or make woozy the fat man with a punch to the gut, then a right hook to the chin?
2. Can the teenager knock out the woman with a blow to the chin?
3. Can the blacksmith knock out or make woozy the first man with one or both fists to the back of the head?
4.Can the blacksmith and teenager together knock out or make woozy the fourth man by together punching him in the face?

I'm assuming the 4 captors have no weapons and the 3 captives just want to escape

1st shot to the fat man: while fat may indicate out of shape, love of food, etc, fat is also an insulator and a cushion so it's harder to punch in the solar plexus to drive out air. A hard shot or two in the throat are good-disables by cutting off wind or can kill by crushing larynx. Also everyone has those nerves just below the ears at the jaw joint. Two hard pokes there and you've several seconds of agony for the recipient and time for more hits or escape.

2nd hit to the fit woman's chin: it'll rattle her teeth, harder could break some. Again good disabling shots to her solar plexus, her throat, hard kick to the knee to force it backwards, slam on her instep to break foot bones.

3rd hit back of the head--do it at the base of the neck, the man will drop. Kidney punches, slamming face into stone, or stomping on the lower back will break vertebrae, rupture organs, etc.

4th face punches: to eyes can blind, on nose can break, boxing the ears: cupping your hands and slamming them to the ears drives air in quickly and can rupture the eardrums. Was a fav chastizement for children for centuries and the cause of Beethovan's deafness.

Anything to hand useful as a weapon? A board, lantern, even dirty straw in the eyes can momentarily blind an opponent.

Great story, mollyluna!

When my (now-16-y-o) was in middle school, he had a bully problem. My DH taught him how to punch effectively, and we told my son that if he got suspended for fighting back, he would get in no additional trouble from us. Bully tried to hit my son, my son hit back--bully backed off. Yay.

A throat punch is a nice incapacitator too... an easy shot for the lighter, shorter types - and it would work on just about anyone but the fat guy, whose throat may not be accessible.

The jailors sound pretty confident if they let the middle-aged woman in first and leave nobody outside. Prisoners generally don't skip along compliantly to torture and execution. Are the jailors armed?

The prisoners are on day 3 of no food or water, and the bad guys have been systematically torturing and executing people for 200 years (shadow government). People have suspicions, rumors occasionally circulate, and when you're finally the one who's drugged and imprisoned, the bad guys count on the rabbit-before-snake effect when they finally open the cell door. 95% of the time it works.

thanks for your suggestions!

Okay, I know this is gonna be bad, but I'll bite. What's the rabbit-before-the-snake effect?

Well, the mom in Cellular (Kim Basinger) takes out two bad cops, kills them both, so I'm voting for the kickass middle-aged woman. :D

Sorry for the obscure example. I got it from a 1940s Philo Vance movie I watched the night before. I mean: mesmerized through terror. The captives *know* they're toast. The rumors loop through their minds for 3 days, getting scarier and scarier, then when the bad guys finally come through the door: zzzzt! Brain cramp. Add to this the fact that everyone believes the bad guys are the best thing to happen to civilization since sliced bread, and their minds can't process the shock quickly enough to fight back.

My weaver can certainly handle herself: she has 2 older brothers who taught her how to fight, plus she's kicked robbers' butt on trips home from the farmers' market. I used the hand-smashing-nose twice in Book 1, and didn't really want to over use it, but I may have to, to make the scene effective.

Thanks!
