Forgive my ignorance on this subject (and the question I have), but I read on an agent's website that if the book is sold, the publisher will pay all monies, including the advance, directly to the agent. The agent then "make payments of domestic earnings due clients promptly, but in no event later than ten business days after clearance."
It's according to the "AAR Canon of Ethics."
I assume that is actually the way that it is done, but as an unpublished author who has just begun to send out queries, i was somewhat surprised by it. It makes it seem like the author is working for the agent instead of the other way around.
Since there is no such thing as a stupid question, I have to ask: Is this the standard way that an author gets paid?
