Quick Question RE: Publishers

I have a question in regards to where I should shop this book idea.
It deals with a part of the sex industry that is really lesser known. I'm researching it now and it will incorporate the side of the customer, the sex industry worker, profiles, and basically the ins and outs of the business. Sorta expose type thing with real character profiles and anecdotes.
Is this classified as sex, business, both, what?
It will be nonfiction, but I've no idea what publishers pick up this type of book.

Any responses pointing me to a print publisher or even an ebook publisher, is appreciated.
Legit ones please, haha. I've been published before, so I am not going to entertain people telling me Lulu or PublishAmerica. Thanks

Not knowing much about it, I would suggest trying general nonfiction publishers unless you are specifically trying to spin it as a business or how to book. So look for mainstream nf houses and see where a query to those will take you. Good luck!

I caught that one, too, and wondered if the appropriate category should be "porn"? How about Flint Publishing or Playboy Enterprises? (semi-serious)

I would try the European publishers, they do more of this kind of book. PowerHouse if it has pictures is good. Taschen also if there are photos (I'm not talking porn photos, just photos of the people, industry, etc.). Simon & Schuster has some books that fit this genre, but I would think you might have better success with European publishers.

Who publishes books that are generally comparable? See what is in big bookstores and listed in Books in Print. Check out Jeff Herman's Guide, Writer's Market, Literary Marketplace . . . . Publishers already in that space should be the best targets. Also, study agent lists for clues to who represents that sort of book. (The books already listed, plus Guide to Literary Agents.) Has Publisher's Weekly reviewed anything comparable enough to give you a lead to an appropriate publisher? Worth checking out.

You pretty much need to know what is already available that is comparable (close enough at least to suggest scope of market) for your book proposal anyway.

All IMHO FWIW.

I also liked Nomad's suggestion that the book might be sold as a How-To.

My comments weren't helpful, I know. So I may be willing to participate in your research. Just to make up for it.
