Here's a quick question for movie junkies--

What movies have had dolphins play a significant role in? Silly yes, but I was looking for a dolphin equivalent of Jaws.

Additionally, if any novel or other work of fiction that fits this bill comes to mind, please let me know!

'The Night of the Dolphin' segment from The Simpsons - Treehouse of Horror XI also comes to mind. :D, if you want a Jaws parody that is.

Dolphin horror movies? I'd start with Orca (killer whales being technically dolphins, after all). Ironically, Jaws 3D also works, even if the dolphins save people instead of eating them. 1408 is a decent technicality (The Dolphin Hotel), but Day of the Dolphin is probably more in line of what you are looking for (talking dolphins delivering mines to boats), and parodied in The Simpsons (well, not really, but you should track down Night of the Dolphins anyway). Another horror mini-series is The Creature, but again the friggin' dolphin saves the day.

It should be noted that there a lot of dolphin entries at IMDB (271), but I figured these were closer to what you were looking for; after all, most movies portray dolphins as friendly critters, such as Flipper and River of the Black Dolphins...

I can't believe no one mentioned Flipper. Yes, there was a movie in 1996.

As for books, several of David Brin's "Uplift War" novels (SF) featured dolphins ("Sundiver" is one). Also Arthur Clarke's "The Deep Range" and "Dolphin Island".

ETA: I don't think I've ever seen dolphins (ORCA excepted) portrayed as bad guys. And even in ORCA, the whale was enraged because his pregnant mate was captured and killed by evil humans.

Johnny Mnemonic showed a tech modified dolphin.

I'm trying to remember, but I think there was a movie named something like "Day of the Dolphin" (which I think the Simpsons parodied) which had something to do with dolphins being used as spies. (Might be wrong about that, I still haven't had my morning coffee ;) )

Day of the Dolphin comes to mind. Not one of George C. Scott's finer performances I thought....
