All:

Hope this isn't violating anything in the forum, but my grandson is autistic and I felt the need to pass along the below message. Purely voluntary, if anyone would like to participate. Thanks.

The video is touching and the music is quite good.

The band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.40 to Autism Speaks for *each time* the video is viewed the funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along to your friends and family. They are aiming for 10,000 hits, but hopefully we can help them to surpass this goal.

I'm always suspicious of these kinds of things, so I usually verify with a site like Snopes.com. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it's legitimate.

Thanks, Roger. I checked it out, too, but I should have included that in my post. The original sender on my message was:

thanks for putting that up. I am sure you are aware but there is enormous evidence of a connexion between autistic behaviours and gut health. Pure Aloe Vera juice lines the gut and reduces permeability and so reduces the passage of toxins into the blood. (We met a lady with an autistic son whose symptoms were dramatically reduced by drinking aloe vera juice every day).

There is also a suspected link with candida albicans overgrowth. We know this through bitter experience.

Reduce or eliminate refined sugars, give acidophilus, reduce wheat (if you can) and dairy. You will probably see a big improvement. I hope I am not butting in here, or giving my thoughts where they are not welcome, but the power of the control of diet can be quite remarkable.

Thanks, Oscuri. Interesting information. Yes, Aiden is on gluten-free, lactose-free diet. Here's the little guy...

other than just lactose, you should look into the milk protein as well.
Casein is one of the issues for my daughter.

We have had to go gluten and casein free here, as well as removing
any artificial food colors from their diet, and removing all corn products
from my son's diet.

There is much that can be done to help along those lines, but no silver
bullet that I can find.. I'm still searching and praying though, and they
have both come a very long way towards being out of the mist.

I will certainly hit that link, and I thank you for putting it up there.

Thanks for that link, Bruce. I've forwarded it to one of my good friends, whose son is autistic. Much appreciated.

Thanks, Mark. I left out Casein. That's a no-no, too. The last time they visited (Christmas) and Jeannie and I went to the natural food store to find stuff to make for him, there were so many no-this's and no-that's on the label that I wondered if there was really anything in the package. He does okay, though. He's a great kid. He does respond, but verbal communication is pretty much out (save quoting movie lines). He does spell things out; e.g., with magnetic letters on the 'fridge. He once reacted to his sister crying by spelling "sad" with his letters. You know it's in there--it just can't get out very well.

(This is harder to discuss than I thought it would be...)

His parents, Neal and Janice, are great and doing all the right things. He's in an ABA program in Norman, OK, and loves school. His teachers say he's a favorite among the staff due to his antics. One fun thing: a new gal (read: young, cute) started working at the school. He had always resisted when it came time to move from one activity to the next--but then he started cooperating if she'd give him a hug. "Uh huh," I thought. "This kid's no fool!" :) I'm sure it's a gene pool thing. ;)

Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a monologue. He's just so neat...

Glad to hear the parents are on top of things.:)

and yes, eating out of a package.. not happenin too often here either.

I am very glad you have taken such an interest instead of shrugging it off.
in the long run it will help him quite a bit.

if you wish, I can get y'all some interesting recipies that are GF/CF etc.

That might help on the next visit. :)

and yes, they're in there. you better believe it.
you can also believe it is very frustrating to them to not be able to communicate.

Hey Bruce :)

here they are. :)

Brownies
2 sticks of butter
1/2 cup of cocoa
4 eggs
1 tbs potato flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup rice flour
1 tsp of baking soda

bake at 350 degrees
35 to 40 minutes

====================

Biscuits
1/2 cup rice flour
1 tbs potato flour
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/3 cup buttermilk
1tbs melted butter

bake at 400 degrees
for 10 to 12 minutes

====================

Chocolate chip cookies
1 stick of butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1+1/4 cups rice flour
3 tbs potato flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
chocolate chips

bake at 350 degrees
for 13 to 20 minutes

the rice flour that we use here is actually called glutenous rice flour
but the gluten is apparently different from wheat gluten.

we are also playing around with substituting coconut flour into the mix
for part of the flour.
When you do that you have to add more liquid as well because the coconut
flour absorbs so much. It has really helped though, with texture and flavor.
As I finalize those recipes I'll see about getting them to you. :)

Great video - I saw autism and had to stop in.

I have an Aiden who is autistic as well. He's 8. The gluten-free, casein-free diet did nothing for him, unfortunately. We've had some good improvement with essential oils (Omega 3-6-9)

that's one of the maddening things about this whole issue.

Have you looked at other possible food issues?
I'm currently dealing with my daughter's reaction to corn this morning.
It tends to send her farther in.. :(
and I didn't realize that it was in what she had for supper. :(

we also have to stay away from artificial food colors..

good luck on your search for help MMWyrm.
