Squee! I had to share my excitement here because no one in my meatspace has even heard of this book. One of my new favorite books has been made into a movie:
Richard Yates! In my humble opinion this book is one of the most important books written in the past 50 years. April and Frank epitomize two people living in suburbia and longing for a life other than their own. The end result is tragic and full of despair and drooping hopes. A very fine novel.
What amazes me is how little human nature has changed since the novel was written. With a few tweaks to reflect advances in technology and changes in fashion, the novel would feel quite current, IMO.

Absolutely! I teach the book to my AP seniors, and they live in the heart of suburbia. It is a tool for self-reflection for these kids. Dramatically important novel. Yates said it was a shame he wrote his best book first. Did you ever read Richard Ford's preface to the novel? Wow!
