I could use some insight and advice. I have a MS I’ve worked diligently on for the past three years. I’m on the verge of starting the agent query process but recently, I’ve gotten bogged down in worries that my MS is really just an amalgamation of other plot lines and character profiles I’ve been exposed to over time.

How concerned do I need to be if I have a few plot threads that are similar to another story? I've heard the saying that "nothing is truly original" but my internal “neurotic writer” is in overdrive.

Am I starting to overthink and worry too much about originality? Up until now, I've just focused on making this the best story it can be. Any insight from writers more experienced than me is appreciated.

For the most part, even Shakespeare was just retelling old tales or histories. But if your execution is derivative, you should try to take a different approach.

Think of it logically. How many fiction books are in print? How many plot lines exist?

Does your story match another story scene for scene? Do your characters look exactly like another character with the same goal, the same motive, the same personality?

They say every fingerprint is different, but every fingerprint has lines and curves. Think about that.

No, definitely not. My story actually has a very different overall plot, there's only a few motifs/scenes that have any kind of crossover similarity. Really, when I think about it, the bigger issue is that my MC has some similarities in terms of profession (law enforcement) and background (abusive childhood). I know those are pretty common themes so maybe I am overthinking a bit.

Thanks everyone for your responses so far.

I think (don't quote me...) it's not uncommon for an abused child to grow up to be in law enforcement.

Similar elements is fine. Same elements is probably not. If your execution is unique, the story will feel fresh.
