I'm interested in finding a writing workshop, has anyone taken a Gotham workshop? I'm wondering if it's worth the time and money.

Okay, so now I'm not so sure Gotham has what I'm looking for. I have a "completed" manuscript, but I'd like some professional feedback. Do I hire an editor? I need help.

Thanks,
Chris

That's a good question right now.
Give us an idea of where you're coming from and what you're after, Chris. What's your background? Why are you seeking professional feedback? Are you certain it's professional feedback you're really after?

Well, I'm focusing on my second book now (couldn't get anywhere with #1). Two out of eight agents that I've queried have requested partials and though I thought the book was ready, I now find myself terrified that it's not. I've worked with a critique partner and I've shared chapters online, and I guess I just want someone to tell it to me straight. Is my writing crap or have I got something. Of course if both agents are not interested in reading more then I'll have my answer. I guess I'm kind of planning for that. Does that help?

Two out of eight agents have requested partials? Chris, that's a remarkable success rate. If they reject it, don't automatically assume that you have nothing. There's a million and one reasons it might be rejected. Now's not the time to doubt or second-guess yourself.

I'm trying to be realistic.
Jenny Rappaport blogged about a partial she read that had adjectivitis and I just feel like it's mine. I think I overworked my first couple of pages and I know how crucial those first pages are. They are not representative of the style of the rest of the book and I just feel like I messed up.

I teach at Gotham, so I hope it's worth both the time and the money. Some people, especially in Advanced Fiction, have completed manuscripts, but usually people are in the middle of things. I think if you go to our web site, which is at www.writingclasses.com, you will find a free sample on-line class. But feel free to send questions my way.
