Just a thought, mind you, since the field has expanded quite a bit among pro, semi-pro, and whatnot publications, I figured to myself if I was the only fellow that thinks such a place is useful.

Either branched off from here (under a password) or over in poetry proper.

Speculative Poetry is a growing field, and maybe it ought to have its own little corner to blossom and hunt for bacon.

I dunno, in terms of major works, the only really two big ones I can think of (that I have heard of) are Tolkien's mythologia, and Blake's myths.

It's an interesting suggestion, badducky. I'm sure that speculative poetry is just as welcome in the regular Poetry forums as other types of poetry, but I'll send out the batsignal to Poetinahat and the others. We'll get their input. :)

"The Fairy Queen" by Edmund Spenser, "Goblin Market" by Christina Rosseti, the entire Divine Comedy cycle by Dante...

In modern poetry, "The Wasteland" by T.S. Eliot counts, as does whole cycles of amazing poetry by Ann Sexton (which I was reading when I had the idea)...

Even closer to us, amazing poetry turns up in Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, Goblin Fruit, and many, many other places.

Who is the greatest poet in science fiction? A question I'd love to find the answer to.

I disagree, I think the mentioned works don't fit the category, let alone the fact that none of them are modern examples. That's like saying Borges' short stories were fantasy, it is absurd. The treatment of magic and fantastical elements in these works does not count as fantasy, but rather an entirely different beast all together.

According to you, JBI. Some of us disagree.

I'd call Borges' shorts one edge of fantasy, myself.

ETA: And I agree that there's really interesting things happening in speculative poetry now. One question though -- what would a speculative subforum gain us that posting in the general poetry forum wouldn't? Wouldn't it just marginalize us? I've found the poetry folks pretty open to speculative themes, in the past...

Before anyone gets their hopes up for a speculative fiction subforum here, consider that there is already a very similar setup in the Writing Poetry forum(s). And, while I enjoy poetry as much as the next person, especially that of the speculative genre, it seems to me that this forum isn't a very good place to showcase people's poetic speculations. Neither, in my opinion, is the SF/F section of SYW. Poetinahat is eager to accomodate any and all speculative poets. Perhaps those interested in participating in such an endeavor should visit with him to arrange comfortable accomodations.

'Twas just a thought that I felt deserved airing.

Th real motivator for it is that there are emerging markets for it, all of a sudden, and a couple of them exclusive to speculative poetry.

Badducky, I beg to be enlightened. What markets do you have in mind? I only know Mythic Delirium and Goblin Fruit, none exactly emerging.

I'd say it belongs with poetry. It's such a vastly different form from prose. I couldn't begin to comment on speculative poetry (or any poetry for that matter).
