If you write historical whodunnits they are welcome and can take you on to the Ellis Peters Award. However, I'll tell you now, so that you can howl first, that the entry fee is £20 (Roughly $2US to £1)

The Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger Competition launched the careers of all these crime writers.
Could you be next?
The 2008 Debut Dagger Competition runs from 15th November – 15th February. Go on, take a stab at it, send us the opening chapter(s) – up to 3000 words – and a short synopsis of your proposed crime novel, and you could be a published crime writer.
Winning the Debut Dagger doesn’t guarantee you’ll get published. But it does mean your work will be seen by leading agents and top editors, who have signed up over a dozen winners as well as shortlisted Debut Dagger competitors.
The Debut Dagger is open to anyone who has not yet had a novel published commercially. First prize is £500 plus two free tickets to the prestigious CWA Duncan Lawrie Dagger Awards and night’s stay for two in a top London hotel. All shortlisted entrants will receive a generous selection of crime novels and professional assessments of their entries, and will also be invited to the Dagger Awards Dinner.

In case anyone waxes poetic?

this landed in my inbox today.

The Tapestry of Bronze is sponsoring a series of poetry contests to celebrate Greek and Roman mythology and the Olympian gods. The
subject of the first contest is Zeus (also known as Jupiter), the King of the Gods.

Each poem may be no longer than 30 lines and each poem must be in English.

The first contest opens on February 15, 2008 and remains open until March 31, 2008. You can read about the rules and the prizes now
by going to

http://www.tapestryofbronze.com/OdeForm.html

Hope that many of you will enter! It costs nothing but a little time. Even if you don't feel particularly poetic, it's a way to
honor Zeus. One of the reasons for starting this contest was to show to the world in general how important the Greek gods and myths
are - even today - and to encourage others to develop interest.

Also, feel free to share this message with others. There's a special section for those under 18, so we especially hope to encourage
high school teachers to pass this out to their students.

Kind regards
Victoria Grossack

In the Footsteps of Gilgamesh

(Edited by Mark S. Deniz)

1st April 2009, Gilgamesh Press will publish its first anthology, In the Footsteps of Gilgamesh. We want to help promote new writers – one of our company goals – by reserving a slot in the anthology for a story from a writer who is, as yet, unpublished in any fiction medium.

The anthology will concern itself with tales from Assyrian mythology, such as the creation story and the Epic of Gilgamesh (details available on Wikipedia ). However, the stories in In the Footsteps of Gilgamesh will be interpretations or re-writes of these myths, and will fall under the genre umbrella of speculative fiction.

This means that before you write, you need to familiarise yourself with Assyrian mythology.

We are not strictly looking for re-written myths based in ancient Mesopotamia, you may write, for example, a futuristic science-fiction tale, a fantasy short story which takes place on another world or a straight horror story, as long as there is clearly some reference to the original myth.

Your story should be between 3,000 – 5,000 words and must contain speculative fiction elements (such as those mentioned above).

Any questions for those unsure of the theme are welcome and can be directed to: [email protected]

Submissions must be sent in Rich Text Format (.rtf), Double Spaced in Courier New font and the subject line should state ‘Submission: (your story title)’. Send your submissions to: [email protected]

Your stories will be read by a panel of six judges and the winning entry will be chosen to be published in the anthology. The winner will also receive two copies of the book.

The deadline is 1st December 2008 and all writers will be notified as to the status of their story as soon after this date as possible.

Fish Historical Short story contests.

Our summer competitions open on Sunday 1st of June.

The same as last year they are:

The Fish-Knife Award: A short story competition run in conjunction with the
Crime writers' Association for those of you who fancy tackling a juicy
crime story.
http://www.fishpublishing.com/fish-knife-award-2008.php

Short Histories IV: A short story competition for stories with a historical
theme and setting. This competition is run in conjunction with the
Historical Novel Society.
http://www.fishpublishing.com/historical-short-fiction-prize-2008.php

And then of course we have the aptly named Criminally-Short Short Histories
Award: This is a one-page competition (up to around 300 words) which is
split into three sections, Crime Stories, History Stories and of course
Historical Crime stories. We had a wonderful set of entries last year and
we are looking forward to reading these little gems again this summer.
http://www.fishpublishing.com/criminally-short-histories-2008.php

-oOo-

The Micro-Fiction Showcase is also open. The May competition closes at
midnight tonight, but that's OK because the June competition opens at
midnight tonight.

The Micro-Fiction Showcase runs for three months, with monthly prizes, and
a final showdown of all the monthly winners from May, June and July, where
you, all the registered Fish Authors, get to vote for the ultimate winners
in each category. All the monthly winners will appear in the NEXT Fish
Anthology.

You can find out all about this year's Micro-Fiction Showcase at:
http://www.fishpublishing.com/Micro-fiction-showcase2.php

And you can read the winning entries from last year's competitions at:

Contests!

Hi everyone,

Things have been VERY quiet over in Historical SYW for a while now, and pdr has just posted a list of contests held by Fish Publishing in conjunction with the Historical Novel Society.

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2405103&postcount=9

I've already got a 2k word historical short ready, but I'd like to try a short short or micro fiction or two. Is anyone else up for writing some shorts this summer? I think a challenge here would be fun, and we've got lengths from 60, to 300, to 4000 to choose from. What do you say?

I'm looking more at stateside contests - working now on the Big Muddy contest (details in the western forum - but it doesn't have to be a western; it has to relate to the Mississippi River or one of the sister rivers). And, in my opinion, the Fish contests seem just a little bit pricey. Puma

Hi Puma,

I mentioned the Fish contests because I think it'd be a great feather in one's cap, so to speak, to have a pub credit associated with the Historical Novel Society. Wouldn't that likely impress a prospective agent/publisher into giving our historical novel a look?

The Fish micro fiction monthly contests throughout the summer (not associated with the HNS but open to most genres) are only 2 Euros each entry. They wanted to make it accessible (in terms of cost) to everyone. And keep in mind that the Fish prizes are pretty large --

Fish Knife first prize 1000 Euros
Historical Short first prize 100O Euros
Micro Fiction (60 words) prize 25 Euros

You know, I just may. I'm most of the way through my latest round of revisions, and after that it's time to wait for beta feedback to trickle in, work on the query, and really start getting my elbows deep in the Late Empire. I've already come across several anecdotes that could be an absolute blast to turn into a short or two...

Ah, you are all still alive!

I'm no good at shorts either.
I've got a long for the Fish.
Doing a short hist-myst.

But the whole board seems moribund and I've to get my website finished and blog up and running.

I'll try though if I see signs of activity from people!

Yep, still alive! Same old story though - work's busy, baby's fussy, what spare time I do have usually goes to writing (or these days, editing). But I'm here and respond when I have something to add (hard to do when no one posts, though).

Just a suggestion...

I'm in the middle of June submissions and have discovered a magazine which accepts 55s and 69ers.
They do not require payment so perhaps we could all put in a sub?

These are flash (nano)fiction pieces. The magazine is Per Contra: http://www.percontra.net/submissionsnanofiction.htm
Guidelines here:
Per Contra accepts fifty-fivers and sixty-niners. See the essay on nano-fiction for more information.

Fifty-fivers must be exactly fifty-five-words long and must adhere to form. The first sentence must be exactly ten words long. The second must be nine words long. The third must be eight words long. The fourth must be seven words long. The fifth must be six words long. The sixth must be five words long. The seventh must be four words long. The eighth must be three words long. The ninth must be two words long. The tenth must contain only one word.

Paragraph breaks in fifty fivers may occur at the end of any sentence, and may not occur at all.

Sixty-niners must be exactly sixty-nine words long. No form is required for sixty-niners.

NUMBER OF STORIES TO SUBMIT

Submit up to five nano-fiction pieces at a time. Do not submit another work until you have received a response from us on your previous submission.

I'm still alive and still around, just haven't been doing much writing lately. Got half a dozen deadlines to meet at work, several scripts due for a hobby organization, a line edit to finish, several Christmas songs to polish before October...

I'm still alive too, but trying to put as much time into my WIP as possible. I'm heading off to Australia in a few days to spend a month with the family - including new grandbaby born yesterday! I'll take my laptop of course, and will try to get some writing done, even if only on those horribly long flights.
