Tough question

Ok, I'm hoping this isn't as complicated as I think it might be.

My MA's class is publishing our anthology at the end of Feb. The prologue to my novel is going to be in it.

Right now, I'm just at the point where I want to start shopping the novel. I'm worried that the publication might cause problems. Now of course we all still keep the rights to our work. But it's still a publication that will be on sale throughout England in Waterstones, small bookstores, etc. It also is shipped out to the agents and publishing companies that have a relationship with the University.

I'm just trying to figure out how to put this into a query.

Any help would be appreciated.

Since you aren't selling any rights to the prologue, I don't see how it's a problem. At the end of the query, simply state that the novel's prologue was written for Your Class and will appear in an anthology published by Them (I'm assuming the university press).

It may not be a bad idea to find out exactly which agents and publishing companies this is being sent out to. Could be a foot in the door if they like your pitch for the rest of the novel.

That's the whole idea but I figure it doesn't hurt to shop around too.
The majority of agents are in London that will receive the book and I'm back in Canada. Although I have plans to move back to the UK it won't be for a while. I was thinking about checking out the American market too. 0
