Very quick question.

When querying, can you say "Fantasy novel?" Or is that akin to "fiction novel?"

Nope not the same.

All novels are fiction but not all novels are fantasies. Fantasy is a subset of novels.

At least that's how I see.

'Fantasy' is a genre and a useful term for classifying your book.

'Fiction novel' makes baby Jesus cry, and me shit on your carpet.

What he said.

If you want one that at first blush seems iffier, take a look at "science-fiction novel." But what else would you call it?

(And before someone says, but doesn't "science-fiction" imply "novel"?: no, it doesn't. There are science-fiction movies, science-fiction games, science-fiction magazines, and a substantial body of science-fiction criticism.)

Danthia

I have read more than one agent (In fact, Janet Reid said it just recently on her blog) that if they see someone say "my fiction novel" it's an imeadiate rejection. All novels are fiction. "Science fiction novel" is different, as the fiction applies to the science part, not the novel part.

I just said my 65,000-word YA fantasy, "Title" and left it at that.

Gene Wolfe says all fiction is fantasy, just some people are honest enough to come out and say it. Or words to that effect. Anyway, what peaches said.

Yes. He also defined 'magical realism' as "Fantasy written in Spanish."
