View Full Version : Who wants to play Name that Dog?

Well, Dog got her shots, frontline, heartworm test, Microchip, et al today. She was a good girl and very stoic. I even tried taking the blood myself (and failed- I got it on the first attempt but she moved. After that I kept messing up) and she was quiet and didn't complain.
I let her in the house at night now and she quickly passes out on the floor. LGDs (Livestock Guard Dogs) can be pretty mello and I love it. (She's an Anatolian Shepherd)
We are working on the training but I'm still learning. She does know several commands already, so I'm pretty happy with that.
I don't have a pic of her yet, and dunno if I'll be able to upload onto a school computer (my laptop is out for repairs). But, she looks a lot like this dog http://www.possumhollowfarms.com/images/Sarastands2003b.jpg only her nose is mostly pink.
So, Name that Dog! Ya'll were so helpful in naming my last pet (Ceir the lovebird) that I'm turning to you again. Latin words are strongly preferred, in order to keep with the theme (Ceir and Coracoid. I also have Riki which is Maori. These are all birds though). And no, Ursis polaris does not role off the tounge, lol. Rep points for all participants :) Bonus if anyone knows any nice names from her homeland.
Cheers,
Christina and 'Dog'

I was wondering about Dog today and was going to ask you about her. I'm so happy to hear that she's doing ok, sleeping in the house and has a new mommy. I wasn't sure if someone had claimed her. The name Dog has grown on me so I will be useless in the naming category. I will always think of her as Dog. It was really a great thing you did by taking her in. She sounds like a sweetie. You've got bonus points in pet heaven for this kind deed. Do you know how old she is? I just can't believe someone would just drop her off, especially in winter. Give her a kiss from a dog lover in Florida.

Hehe, I know it's meaning b/c I named my MC that. Not sure I can name my dog after my MC though ;)

Thanks Joyce for the kind words. I couldn't get rid of her if I tried (and last week I wanted to flake on her (dog=responsibility), but I let her inside, had some tea, and waited for the feeling to pass ;) It didn't take long)
She is 3-5 years old, so not a pup but not a senior, especially since Anatolians live long for large breed dogs.
And thanks for the ideas so far. I'll bouce a few by her and see how they feel, but keep em comin'!

Sometimes if you watch your pets they will name themselves. Something in their personality will show you what they should be called.

Boy that's the truth! My dogs have their formal names but are called by their nicknames because of some personality quirk they have.

How about Verena? From the latin for "truth" or "true".

Thanks for more suggestions :)
She's been begging for belly rubs all day. I'm gonna have to get out my horse brushes and see what she likes!

Looks like a Drusilla to me.
or Guida = the guide
Actually, I've always been told dogs should have names that are short (one syllable), so that when you call their name and give an order it comes in a short/sharp tone for immediate response. So if you agree with that, then:
Jinx = charm
Mei = great one
Nyx = white haired
Chumplet

I've always gone for unusual human names with at least two syllables so you can call them from a long distance.
My cat's name was Trixie (Trikkkkseeeeeee!) but I lean toward a name someone had for her sheepdog: Evelyn. So human.

Well, I just went over the old Name my bird thread. Oh the insanity. I guess dogs don't inspire ya'll to be insane.
So, anyways, through a twist of chasing different ideas, roots, and random thoughts I have come up with Ara. I just hope it fits her :)
Ara, as in alter (also the genus name of Macaws).
Cheers,
Christina
I like it, has a nice ring to it. Say "Hello" to Ara for me!

:Thumbs: I love the name Ara! My little Rio is a blue-crowned conure (genus Aratinga). Aratinga translates to 'little macaw'. :)
He'll return to avatar status as soon as I retire Santa Pancho. :D

Thanks everyone :)
Today Ara got a bath, but now she is back out in the pasture getting dirty. My neighbor came by and she had a grand time running between the two of us. At least he noticed that she'd been bathed ;)
