So, it turns out my MC isn't my MC after all...

When I first started my current WIP the story was about a guy who returns to his small hometown after getting fed up with big city life. He comes back to find that a girl he like has had her life totally turned upside down by a violent crime commited shortly after the MC had left said small town.

I debated long and hard about telling a chapter or three from the viewpoint of the girl/victim. I had originally hoped to have her be something of an enigma, both for the MC and the reader (since it's told in 3rd person limited).

I finally decided to write from her perspective and she just keeps getting more interesting and having more vital interactions with various characters in the story.

I used to read posts with people saying their MC changed and read them with, I guess, mild disbelief. Now I get it :)

It does happen from time to time but it's hard to believe until it happens to you. :)

Congrats on finding the voice your story needs...keep at it!

Yeah, that happened to me, too -- the secondary character that I originally conceived of as a correspondent of the MC turned into male lead. I'm enjoying his story.

you martyr and shine.
This happened to me too. I ended up with two MC's, and told the story in third person limited with the viewpoints changing between chapters.

Shhh... don't spill the beans. We Minnesotans are known for writing perfect first drafts every time. ;)

I haven't had this happen yet. I'm a researcher and an outliner, though. I have about 90% of an idea where my story is going when I start.

well, of course we do! Why do you think I changed the MC? It wouldn't have been perfect otherwise :D

And the third, fourth, and fifth lol. Some of my stories were edited to death when I should have been focussing on sentence structure. I'm learning but now I'm really starting to get it. While my beta looks over my WIP, I am editing and rewriting my other WIP and its really starting to take better shape. Of course, my MCs are all the same..... my minor characters on the other hand are changing slightly lol. And in one story, I think I will be taking the story out of first person and change it to third because I believe I can tell stories better that way. I'm still a little new since I haven't really been able to learn the right stuff for me lol. 2 books published, a zillion to go lol!
