How many stories do you have out in circulation at any given time? I am just wondering... Also, if you don't mind sharing, what's you average number of rejections before the piece is accepted? I am looking at people's "rejection pledge" statistics and cannot help but wonder...

Thanks!

I juggle two pen names and with contests, fiction, and nonfiction, I've had somewhere btwn 10 and 20 usually floating out there. Weds are submit days-so every Weds I submit at least one thing, somewhere. because it takes so long to hear back, they add up. I've been waiting on one since March. Argh.

the pieces I've had published/are awaiting were on the first time I'd submitted that piece, except one. as far as publications-of what I've had published, only one had previously rejected a prior piece, but they accepted the second and third pieces I sent. I'm short-listed on two pieces, both were those pieces' first submissions. But on one, that publication has rejected me previously on something else. But short-lists can and do turn into rejections. so.

Everything, but one, was targeted for those specific markets. The one was rejected by the market it was targeted for, and the editor wrote saying they'd changed guidelines and suggested another market it would be perfect for. I followed her advice and they did indeed accept it.

hope that helps.

Behind you! Boo.
If I wasn't working on a novel right now, I'd have more out there. But right now I only have 2 stories and 2 flash fiction pieces. I've heard that the average story gets rejected 20 times before publication.

I just started submitting, so I don't have reliable stats for myself.

At the moment, I have 4 pieces out: 1 flash, 2 shorts, and a novel sub. Realistically, it's only three because one of the shorts has been with one publisher for a while w/o any reply as to yay or nay, so I'm writing that one off as of the first of the year.

I haven't kept careful track of how long it took to get some of my stories published. I placed a novel exerpt in a small-press fiction contest earlier this year, so that was a hole in one. I sold another story after about three rejections - that was encouraging! I've got one in circulation now that's been rejected about five or six times. Having trouble finding someone how appreciates it as much as I do.

Like WendyNYC, I'm in the midst of a novel right now. So I'm letting my short story submissions taper off as the year comes to an end. One of my New Year's resolutions is to take a hard look at the stories I haven't placed yet.

So, right now, I've got 2 stories out at a total of 5 magazines. Over the last couple of years, my peak was probably around 6-7 stories at 30-40 magazines.

I track my submissions and stats obsessively. At least I know I'm insane.

The six stories I've placed over the last year or so had the following number of rejections before they got published: 5, 7, 8, 17, 17, 18. (Pike, I'm impressed -- no holes-in-one here.)

The stories that I'm pulling from circulation for a tough love treatment have hit that magic (and totally arbitrary) 20-rejection mark.

Uh, I guess I missed it somewhere -- what is the "rejection pledge"?

Think I've 5 out--not enough I know I need to start flogging them.

If you get 50 rejections rewrite, check that you're sending to the appropriate publishers in the required format, and hold off chucking it all until you've gotten 200 rejections.

Few rejections are really about the story per se, the gems are from those editors who offer notes on revisions. Do 'em, resub and keep writing!

I just started in on writing and submitting short stories recently, so only had one out (until it was accepted earlier this week)...will have additional ones out once I get all the rewrites done on two more stories.

I have no idea how some of you folks can have 10 or more stories out...I barely have the chance to get a new one written before I either get a rejection or acceptance.

Thanks, Mike - so was I! It's my crowning achievement for this year and probably the decade.

easy. I started submitting fiction in March. I still have stories out from March. And May. And June. And argh!!! So, by submitting something every month, it adds up.

there're different turn-arounds for different publications. It seems most of the ones I try for, they're on duotropes most slothful or should be. :)

I'm noticing, too, there're real differences between genre submittals, literary, and print for time/acceptance, etc. anyone else?

Oops, it appears my recent acceptance made me forget about my submissions. I've only got one story out with one publication and one particular story is sitting on my harddrive collecting dust... I guess I'll be sending it out once I figure out where to send it (and if it needs any rewriting).

At the present moment I have the following out:

8 pieces of sudden fiction (1000 words and less)
6 pieces of fiction (1000 words or greater)

I try to submit something every week and once I get a rejection I send it on to the next market I've earmarked for it.

I started writing December of last year so I'm not up to speed yet but I'm getting there.

How? I've been writing fiction and having it accepted for more than twenty years. What would be odd is if I did not have ten - or more - stories out at any time!

when you guys say "I have 5 out" does that mean 5 different pieces of work or on piece out to five places?

I don't submit the same piece to more then one place at a time so when I say I have 8 pieces of sudden fiction and 6 pieces of fiction out they are all individual pieces. Once a piece comes back I will then send it out to another market.
