I've been reading through the "Stupid Things Non-Writers Say" and it's obvious there are a lot of ignorant/uninformed/egotistical/non-supportive comments coming from the non-writers in our lives.

On the other side of that coin, what are the best/supportive/favourite things non-writers have said to you? Share the good stuff. :)

My favorite moments are when readers get excited, start guessing about what's happening next, or get attached to the characters. Any time people invest energy in what I write, not because they feel obligated, but just because they like it, my heart melts. :D

And, my father is the most supportive person ever, which is funny because I quoted him in the "stupid things" thread. It wasn't really stupid, what he said, just silly. But, overall, he pressures me to succeed and he believes in me, which is overwhelming and awesome.

This isn't a comment per se, but it was the biggest compliment I've received: a friend read one of my short stories while I was puttering around the house, and she had that look (you know, the kind of look a reader gets when she's completely absorbed) whenever I peeked over at her. When she finished, she put the magazine down, exhaled, and just said, "Wow."

That made my week.

I have a great story for this thread. I decided to tell my favorite teacher of all time (I will call him Mr. Awesome for the sake of this thread) that I wrote a book. This is what happened.

Me: OMG MR AWESOME.
MA: Yeah?
Me: I have... super secret news. We must be stealthy. Incognito.
MA: Okay.

We proceed to sneak into his room very theatrically.

MA: What's up?
Me: It is super secret.
MA: Yeah, you said.
Me: I wrote... a book.
MA: Really!? Is it going to be published? When? You need to tell me. I will buy it. I'll go to the store and be like, "Do you have this book? No? THEN GET IT!"
Me: :D

And then we had a party. But not really.

It was great.

From an ex-boyfriend, in the middle of a nasty, nasty break-up:

*pause in between all the arguing, to reference something I'd mentioned to him in writing* - "You always did write really good letters, though."

/commence fighting.

A friend started crying when she read a scene and it wasn't even a sad scene. She told me it was just beautiful and had so much emotion. I do love it when a friend introduces me as a writer.

"I just called my BF and read her the first chapter out loud."

That felt good.

Yesterday my mentor told me I suck. That felt bad. Wait, that's a different thread...

I've done presentations at several libraries around town. I've appeared twice at one specific library, and I bump into the librarian that that runs that one from time to time at different functions.

I've been published by Arcadia, and in our town there are numerous different titles on a variety of locations and subjects done by that publisher. Recently I saw that librarian again at one event I was participating in. Now, since he works in a library, he's seen all the area Arcadia titles, so he's quite familiar with all of them. He took me aside and told me that out of all the Arcadia books in our area, he thinks my Subway book (see avatar) is the best of all of them, for its subject matter and the way it's written.

I still think I improved greatly by my third one, but the compliment was really nice.

"I've been telling everyone I work with I used to go out with you, so when your book's published they'll know I've ****ed a writer."

Uh, yeah...thanks for that, Bud...

My boyfriend says he'll work so I can stay at home and concentrate on my writing.

When I was attempting novel number 4 I let my friends read each chapter as it was done thinking it would help me stay motivated. Alas they really like my work and can't wait for my current novel attempt to be finished so they can read it.

My sister has historically only made it through exactly ONE book...The Notebook. I gave her mine, not expecting much. She called me the first day and told me she was on page 50 and couldn't put it down. That made my week!

My dad, who has self-confessed he's NEVER read a book, told me he would read mine. Then again he's also now famous for telling me I should keep writing because "if you throw enough sh*t at a wall, eventually something will stick.":ROFL: THANKS dad!
