It's a real toss-up between Transformers and 300 for me. They might not have been as good as, say, American Gangster or Die Hard, but I'm a huge fanboy when it comes to Frank Miller stuff and badass robots.

Definitely 300. I loved Transformers when I saw it the first time but haven't really felt like watching it again, whereas I can pop in 300 any time.

Casino Royale was great. 300 was good but I couldn't watch it again. Transformers was mindless fun -- the last 30 minutes was too long. I think my favorite this year is Live Free and Die Hard. Yeah, I shock even myself!

I haven't seen many movies from this year but I loved Transformers. I watched maybe 5 minutes of 300 but the fake look drove me nuts...I couldn't get into it. Still waiting to see the latest Die Hard...but I loved the 3rd one and I have no doubt I'll like the latest one.

Definitely Casino Royale for me. The opening chase sequence alone was worth the price of admission.

Okay, so I get in for free since I'm the local reviewer, but still.... ;)

I liked Transformers, but I'm not a big fan of humor in action movies (unless it's dark humor). Die Hard was really good. So was Shooter, but that may be because I'm in love with Mark Whelberg.

Well, the only movies I've seen from this year so far are Hot Fuzz, 300, and Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Hot Fuzz was a comedy, so it doesn't count, even though it did have some fun action.

300 was just tedious as hell.

So I'd go with Fantastic Four.

Hmmmm... I've seen all the movies listed so far. I liked Live Free Die Hard but in my case, Casino Royale beat it hands down.

LFDH had a few too many "Whoah, that's just ridicuous" moments. Which is one of the reasons I haven't enjoyed a Bond movie since I was a kid - but the latest did away with a lot of the extraneous fluff that had plagued them over the years and was leaner, grittier and more enjoyable.

I'm saving my vote though until I see The Bourne Ultimatum as I heard it's excellent.

So it'll be between those two: Casino Royale and Bourne Ultimatum.

Bourne Ultimatum is really good (except that the cameraperson seemed to have the palsy), but I do think Casino Royale was better. But we're talking the difference between very good and excellent here. :)

This thread has given me the desire to hold an Action Movie Showdown this weekend.

Casino Royale. Daniel Craig is the first Bond who I actually believed could kill someone and do all the stuff he does in the movies.

Bourne Ultimatum. I actually liked the palsy camera movement. I know, I'm weird. My sister was practically puking from it, I loved it.

I won't pick between the two. I can't pick.

I did love 300, totally didn't get Transformers (boring except for shia leboef who was awesome) and don't even get me started on LFDH.

Yup. Bourne was good but the shaky cam was a bit repetitive and the ending was ridiculous -- I liked Bourne because he was so human, but the ending made him into a Hollywood superhuman (so how many car crashes, bombs, and falling off 20-floor buildings can he survive?) that is so different than the last two Bourne films -- he became a Bond caricature.

On the contrary, Casino Royale gets back to the basic, and Daniel Craig is awesome as Bond.

Thanks for that. I thought I was bonkers. But that was the most unsteady steady cam I've ever seen, with the most rapid gunfire cuts in history. It got so tedius, that I yelled "this is bullshit." Somebody was burning on meth. No steady crane or dolly shots to speak of.

Live Free or Die Hard . . . unless At World's End counts as action (I would call that fantasy, though). I'm a big fan of the Die Hard series, and I liked Live Free or Die Hard by far the best. The computer geek kid side-kick was so funny, the action scenes were totally mind-blowing, and I was surprised to discover that NOT using the F-word every other sentance actually made the movie better. The first time I saw Die Hard 4 I went to it straight from seeing Pirates for something like the 10th time and between the canon fireing in Pirates and all the guns and explosions in Die Hard my ears were ringing (not a complaint, mind you :D )

Of course, I'm going to at least three more movies before the end of the year (two of which I think are action) so I guess this could change (not likely, though).
