I'm trying to decide whether to go to Toronto's Book Expo in June. I'm on the west coast so it's a bit of a trek. Just curious if others have been and what you thought. Is it worth going as a way of promoting a book/books, or more as a way of learning more about the industry? What experiences have you had there, or if you haven't been, what have you heard about it?
Thanks for any responses!

Well, my experience of BEC (BookExpo Canada) is somewhat unique, but I'd definitely urge you to go.

It's been a long time since my first one, but I remember feeling incredibly overwhelmed, adrift, and giddy with excitement. I was there as a bookseller; you'll have someone from your publisher to show you the ropes, to make sure you get to the Children's gala (one of two big parties the night before the trade show opens), that sort of thing. Or you could lean on a friendly west coast bookseller (though don't lean too heavily: I'll probably have been drinking, no matter what time of day).

It's a great opportunity to network, to meet people who can make a real difference in your career, and to get a sense of the industry as a whole. I go every year, and I highly recommend it. It is pricey, but you get out of it what you put into it, and some good connections are priceless...

Thanks Robert! I'd really love to go. I just need to be convinced that it's worth the money... so thanks for helping with that. My brother lives in Toronto so I'd have a place to stay, which would help with the cost. And maybe we could have a drink together. I never drink before 10 am though...

Hey Cassidy,

I believe you PM'd me about this and I never replied! I sorry about that, that was just silly of me!

I'm not sure really how worth it it is. I went because my publisher could get me a pass, and I certainly got a lot of free books, so that was nice. I also went to the Children's Book party, which was lots of fun and I met a few interesting people before just hanging out with the Scholastic crowd (who are also lovely and interesting). But I don't know. Like what willie said, it's all about how much you want to put into it.

I do know that the expo is a time for book buyers and publishers, not really authors. Still you could meet some interesting people.

Heck it might just be fun, and if you did come maybe you, me, willie, even illiterwrite and KTC could meet up for coffee or something!

Did somebody say, "Booze and Books"? Sounds good to me.

"even illiterwrite & KTC"?

Hmph.

But yes, I'm in.

It's definitely overwhelming the first time. I couldn't even figure out how to get all the free books and came away with only a copy of the Koran. But it's fun, and there are usually drinks to be had.

The key to getting the free books? Getting there before the Chindigo staff (which is a logistical impossibility).

Oh come on! I meant 'even' in the sense that you guys weren't posting in this thread, at least not at the time! You know I think you guys rock! But yes, if drinks are what is required then I can do that too. I always like to suggest coffee first, just in case . . .

KTC - like the new name! Very . . . name like . . .

Well whenever I suggest drinks, invariably the other person tells me that they don't really do alcohol. So now I just say coffee as a general, "let's get together and hang out" kind of thing.

But yes, I think we should treat this as a group date and be all 1950's about it. Maybe go for ice cream floats, and then the sock hop after!

Jeez, a group date... with booze and now ice cream floats too... this is sounding better and better. Though I've never quite understood exactly what a sock hop is...

Oh dear. My great apologies your highness! See, I knew I was going to get into trouble listing people off.

Shall I just say, come June, we simply must have a Toronto/Ontario/or anyone who happens to be in the vicinity get together that may or may not involve alcohol - but definitely a sock hop?

If there's going to be dancing, there'll definitely need to be drinking. And I won't dance anyway.

A get-together sounds good: BEC runs June 13-16 (trade show June 15-16) next year, and if all runs the way it has in the last few years, I'll be in town from the Sunday prior (June 8).
