Ok, so I'm putting my ms together, trying to do everything as in the FAQ, but on Microsoft Word I have a problem. It's probably basic I hope.
I am trying to put Title / Author on the left side of the header and Page number on the right side, but every time I enter one, the other deletes etc.
So I put my title/author header then I put in page numbers and the numbers appear but the title/author is gone.

My second question is this: I made a poor mistake in only indenting ALL my paragraphs 3 spaces. I guess it's just habit. Is there any quick way to indenting them all to 5 spaces??

Those are my two (urgent!) queries for now, please help, TIA!!

I'm afraid I don't know what's causing the issue with your header, but for the indent issue you can use the find/replace function. Just go to Edit- Replace and in the 'Find' blank type three spaces and in the 'Replace' blank type in five.

For the Header, it sounds like you're putting in the Name/Title and then going to Insert Page Number and choosing it, so it deletes the first. What you have to do is go into the Header, type in the name/title information, then push TAB so that it shifts over to the other side (this is assuming you start on the right). Then you have to do Insert Page Number in Current Position instead of choosing a position. You have to make sure to stay within the Header when you're doing it. Don't click out. That should work, if I understand the problem correctly.

As for the indents, Moxie's right. Do Find-Replace. However, you should probably replace with Tabs, not 5 spaces, because they could get deleted at any time, and Tab, if deleted, is much more obvious. Also, that's what it's there for ;) . To do it, click on "More" in the Find-Replace screen and find "Tab Character" under "Special"

Hope this helps!

Try putting the page numbers as a footer and leave title/author as a header.

EDIT...the above info is even better.

Go to View...Header/Footer. Choose Header. Cursor will be flush left. Type what you want there, hit tab. Cursor will be centered. Type Book Title, hit tab. Cursor will be flush left. Click on # icon to insert page numbers.

I always print my title page separate from the manuscript so that the first page of Chapter One is page 1. You can select don't put number on first page, but page 1 then becomes page 2. (Maybe this is just my personal issue.)

I don't think the agents care too much about each niggling detail. What they want is something that's reasonably easy to read.

If you switch the "start" number from 1 to 0 it fixes that problem. It's kind of weird, but it works.

You can set you first line indent in the "paragraph" section. Right clicking on your text will bring up a flyout menu. (hightlight all your text to change it across the board) I believe .5 (half inch) is standard indent for paragraphs these days. If you set you indents, you never have to worry about tabbing or adding spaces. The indents are automatic every time you hit return.
