I was reading the paper, and they quote someone saying "I hope her death doesn't go in vein.' That's a mistake, right? I was always sure it was 'in vain,' and I just want to double check to make sure I'm not crazy.

Not crazy, at least because of this ;) .

According to my Webster's dictionary, "in vain" means either "to no avail" or "irreverently".

Unless she died from something intravenously injected?

Nah, too much of a reach. It's a mistake.

Maryn, quick to judge

Her death 'doesn't go in vein' is a homonym goof as well as awkward phrasing; it should read more like "I hope her death wasn't in vain."

Ah, that's a relief. Well, it's a relief in that I'm not going crazy, but it's a disappointment that one of Canada's papers makes a silly mistake like this. National Post, you're on notice.
