That's interesting. I haven't bothered subbing to them in a while. I wonder if their submissions have dropped off quite a bit?

I'm happy to read this. Their new submissions schedule is easier to keep track of too. Thanks for posting that.

It is definitely easier to keep track of now. However they have a reading fee on each category of $15-$20 per story. I doubt I'll be submitting anything to them anymore.

Those are contest entry fees though and have always been charged. Straight submissions are fee free and always have been.

As always:
Submissions must be original, unpublished fictionPlease, no novels, poetry, or stories written for childrenSubmissions should be made via our site, but in a pinch you can make paper submissionsPlease doublespace, use 12 point font, to save our eyesWhen we accept a story for publication, we are purchasing first-publication rights. (Once we’ve published your story, you are free to, for instance, include it in your own collection.)Competition submissions are also automatically considered for standard publication. We're happy to consider stories whether they're submitted as competition entries or standard submissions, for which there are no reading fees. Standard or competition? How to decide

Every category will be open for one full calendar month, from the first day through midnight of the last

Cool! Of course, my subs that have been rejected by other mags are unlikely to be accepted by GT, but a gal can dream!

Ah... I thought they had done away with standard submissions totally. I should have read farther into it.

And I do remember contest entries always had a charge to them. I just didn't recall them having quite so many contests per year. They have 4 standard submission periods (January, April, July and October - no fee) and 12 months of competitions (which require a payment).

I'd be more inclined to enter if the fee were less ($5 or so), but perhaps that's a way of weeding down the entries. I know they get a ton.

The contests probably help to maintain a positive cash flow for keeping staff available and GT's good reputation makes that possible. In my opinion, this is really the only way I see much of the short story market surviving in the long term.
