I have a character in a short story who can't drive for a few weeks after unspecified prostate surgery (circa 1997 - 2008). Would this be plausible? If so, how long before he can drive?

How long would he be in the hospital? How would he feel, physically, upon release?

Thank you in advance for any help!

I have no personal knowledge of prostate surgery, fortunately, but I can comment on prostate biopsy.

Can you drive? Yes, but you'd rather drive standing up. That discomfort goes away in a few days.

The biopsy is an outpatient procedure so there is no overnight stay.

How would you feel? You'd feel like the doctor should have at least bought you flowers and a nice dinner the night before the violation.

Hope this helps. :)

It's certainly plausible. It also depends upon which surgery he and and why. The restriction might be anywhere from 1-6 weeks, depending upon which surgery. (1 for an endoscopic laser procedure done for BPH, 6 for an open radical prostatectomy done for cancer)

Thank you all for your input. George, that's exactly the info that I need. I just need a plausible reason for my MC not to drive.

At this point, I'm leaning towards an endoscopic laser procedure for BPH.

Haggis and Mollyluna thanks for sharing.

My character is pretty healthy -- in fact, the prostate problem occurred several years ago, and he's fine. His wife just died, and I needed a plausible reason for him to be in a car that she was driving, at some point in the past. (He's sexist enough that if he were physically able to, he would be driving. Even so, he barks, "You're going to turn left up there!" immediately after she turns on her left blinker.

Please notice, you have to stand up for 1 to 6 weeks.
