In my story, the villian, Yomi, was semi-powerful in the past. He dies far before the main part of the story, and is resurrected into his own body a little ways in but has lost a good deal of his strength. Throughout the course of the story, he goes from being a semi-powerful demon who's warlord of his own province, to having a larger army, to taking over the whole of Makai (demon world), to getting the artifacts of Akasha and becoming a threat to the gods themselves. In other words, he's growing in power and influence along with the heroes.

Has this been something that's done a lot before?

the place to ask that question is your bookshelf.

When constructing epic fantasy, regardless of the culture, a useful guide might be 'WWGRRMD?', or something like that. From what I've seen of your plots and ideas, he'd be a handy guide for you.

'Acacia' is also most awesome.
