Forum Member Craig Shaeffer said:My horror novella ("Witching Hour Theatre") was accepted yesterday by Creative Guy Publishing. Since I mentioned it in another thread, I thought I'd let you know that it went from "pending" to "soon to be released." :-)

Got anything out there? Soon to be released? Tell us all about it!

Congrats, Craig!

Thanks, Mac! I appreciate the congrats, and I think the thread idea is a great one. Judging from what I've read on this and other forums, there are a lot of talented scribes around these parts.

I've only got two other stories out there pending right now, and one of them is probably suffocating at the bottom of the slush pile at one of the "biggies."

The Big Bopper, though, is the novel I'm working on. Yeah, yeah, I know. I won't tell you how good it is, because it doesn't deserve to be called anything until the dang thing is done.

And I promise I won't annoy you guys by talking about it all the time in the coming months. Unfinished novels and a dollar will get you a medium order of fries at McDonald's.

Incidentally, I know that figure is accurate because I forgot my wallet today and had to buy my lunch with the spare change in my truck! :)

I have a short story ("Just a Little, Just Enough") due out this fall in the upcoming anthology Masques V, edited by J. N. Williamson. The TOC includes Masterson, Gary Braunbeck and Ray Bradbury, so I'm happy to be among their number.

Thanks guys. It's just serendipity of a sort that I am in the anthology. It's more the benevolence of a good writer, Gary Braunbeck, whom I befriended about four years ago. In the past, he's acted as a sometime mentor, and about three years ago I showed him this story I'd just written. Gary liked it and recommended it for another anthology that was in the works at the time. Even though he personally knew the editor, I didn't hold out much hope until Gary emailed me and said that the editor might be interested, but wanted some re-writes. Within a three-hour period during that day, I made re-write after re-write via emails based on the editor's suggestions, with Gary serving as an go-between for me and the editor. And after all that work, the editor still turned me down. :(

Gary was upset, said he'd never encountered a situation where the editor actually worked with the writer with suggestions and still ended up rejecting the story. Then the editor had the nerve to send Gary (the editor thought he'd cc'd me, but hadn't, so Gary told me about the email) one of his short stories for comparison to show me my why my story wasn't measuring up. Gary, still upset, later emailed me and told me he had been asked to help edit another anthology and promised to keep me in mind. Again, I didn't hold out much hope, but then in 2003, Gary emailed to say that he was officially working with J. N. Williamson and had slated that my story be included in the TOC. When he told me who was included, I was stunned. Gary sent me a contract, and told me the book is scheduled to come out in late 2005.

Even though the money was nominal, I still feel it's a great coup, and one that will look good on my writing resume (which I have yet to build). And it also gives me a bit more confidence as a writer. :Trophy:

This is just a little brag, but the newest Haunted Encounters anthology arrived on my doorstep today with my spooky story in it...and I wasn't appalled by what I'd written for the very first time since I've had anything published. I think it's a milestone.

AND my husband (who reads little else but Tom Clancy and the drafts I force him to) read it and told me he could tell my writing was more polished now than when the book was printed.

Oh happy day!

On a cool October night at the Starlight Cinema, an all-night horror movie triple feature is about to begin: Witching Hour Theatre. It's the one exciting thing in Larry Wilson's life, not counting the lovely brunette who works the concession stand. Settling in, he loses himself in the atmosphere of the old place: the crowd, the screams, the popcorn and the blood.

But when the second feature ends, only thirteen moviegoers remain. Among them, a woman of nineteen with a fondness for piercings and the macabre, a cop and his wife, a trio of bad-tempered bullies, and a solitary figure sitting silently in the shadows of the back row.

On this endless October night, Witching Hour Theatre will become Larry's worst nightmare. For the movie on the screen is growing stranger by the minute. His fellow theatergoers are disappearing one by one.

And the figure from the shadows is advancing.

Just had four, count 'em, four books picked up by a traditional publisher!

Cane River: A Ghost Story -- As the name implies, a ghost story set in a town that was inspired by my home town of Lake Jackson (2006)

The Mayor's Guide to the Stately Ghosts of Austin -- Real ghosts and hauntings from Austin, Texas (2006)

City of Demons -- One part cop noir thriller, one part bloody horror goodness! (2007)

The Mayor's Guide to the Stately Ghosts of Charleston -- Giving the "Mayor's Guide" treatment to Charleston, where there are quite a few restless souls! (2007)

That brings my total of published works up to seven! Only 6,234,989 to go! :)

'Wallpaper' - my short story which is entered in the Scaremare competition at Mardi Gras Publishers is out this weekend 30-09-06.

The Witness novels are centured around a demon and his possession of a tortured soul who feels suicide is the only way out. It is perhaps best to read the White Volume first because it sets an expectation that I then happily trash in the Black Volume...x
'Wallpaper' is about just that.

I found out tonight that my horror script RED WEDDING is a semifinalist for the Slamdance Horror Competition. Top 20 out of 500+.

The Grand Prize winner gets $10,000 and their movie will be produced by Angel Baby Entertainment. The film will screen at next year's Slamdance Film Festival.

The winner will be announced January 26.

I'm on pins and needles.

And the needles are drawing blood...

You'll have to forgive me because this is a non-horror woo-hoo, but seeing how the Horror forum is my usual haunt I had to post it here.

EnWorld, a community-based RPG website finally announced the finalists for their first series of novels based off their newest line of fantasy gaming modules, the War of the Burning Sky. I made the short list among four other authors and our names are now posted on the website:

I just received word from the editor of Beginnings Magazine that my story There Goes the Neighborhood placed third in their winter writers contest. They haven't linked the story or posted the winnings, but because I've been waiting so patiently since October, she decided to inform me early. (Just a note: they were going to have a Fall Contest, but due to lack of entries she asked to push it out to winter, which I agreed to.)

Not the greatest of news, but worth while for me, considering I've had such a streak of bad luck, to include two refusals on stories the editors loved but couldn't fit in the publication.

BTW, I'll post a link when I get word that it's up.

Last November, I crept into the offices of Coyote Wild (http://www.coyotewildmag.com/)late one evening when everyone had gone home. I found the slush pile on the managing editor's desk and (having no morals) removed my story Medicine Man from the bottom of the pile and stuck it back in near the top. ;)

At least I must have, because for some reason, they decided to publish it. It's here (http://coyotewildmag.com/spring_2007/content/barber_medicineman.html) if you'd like to look at it.

There are lots of really good stories there as well, including an outstanding one by our own ChunkyC (http://coyotewildmag.com/spring_2007/content/stuart_rescue.html). I hope you get the chance to check them all out. :)

Well this morning before leaving for work, I checked my e-mail and (For some reason) decided to look in my "junk" folder (Outlook is setup to throw spam away.). Lo and behold, in the "junk" there was a request from an anthology (Print) to send them a .doc or .rtf of a story I submitted to them a few weeks ago as they are interested in using it. It had been there for a week! Outlook had for some reason marked it as spam.

And just this weekend I was looking at an old diary entry from April 1997 - commenting that I'd just received a cheque for 8 pounds (UK) for a short story... How time flies, and in those ten years I basically gave up writing to finish off my PhD...

My second novel, Seely's Pond (a dark urban fantasy) has just been accepted for publication (and we've signed the contract). Should be out in late 2007!

It's been a while since I've had the time to get down here in AW. Lots of great happenings, so let me give a combined set of contratulations to all who've found success in the genre. I'm impressed with the posts here.

My first horror novel, Something Bad, will launch in October. I also have two others under contract (all three with Medallion Press), Agnes Hahn to come out in August of 2008 and its sequel, Imola to appear sometime in 2009. The latter two are psychological suspense with paranormal overtones, and Medallion is pushing them in the Horror genre.

Well now, it’s been quite a while since I ventured out from under my rock to see what’s going on in the world. The past months have whizzed by and I apologize for not stopping in more often, but you know how life can creep up on you, yank a bag over your head and pummel you into a semi-conscious state…or is that just me.

Anywho…I figured it was time to let those who are interested know that I’ve gone and got two more short stories published. Black Petals Magazine accepted one of my stories, but it will not get published until their Fall 2008 issue. The other, a rather lengthy story, is entitled, A Night in Nutbush, was accepted by Lake Fossil Press for their latest anthology called, For Tabloid Purposes IV. I won’t post links for it, but if you want to know, just PM me and I’ll send you links.

I hope everyone is doing well and you all are doing well with your own endeavors. Good luck to those with stuff still out, and congrats to those of you who have been accepted.

At first it's a simple lost son case, but for PI Derek
Adams things turn quickly to the twilight zone. Soon he's on a remote

An ancient god is waking up, and only blood will stop him.

I finally have some good news to brag about...well sort of.

My short story "The Phantom House" is in the March issue of New Voices of Horror Magazine (a new ezine that started in January). I've been editing and submitting this one around a couple of times. I'm glad I found it a home. You can read it here (http://www.freewebs.com/lucidnightmare48/andreaallison.htm).

While it's a non-paying market, they have a Best of anthology contest. The top 13 stories with the most votes will be feature in it and the authors receive royalties. To vote, you sign their guestbook (http://www.freewebs.com/nvhmag1/readerguestbook.htm) with the title and author of your favorite story. Voting will be open until August.

Well done, Sthrn. :snoopy:

Just got my comp copies of Murky Depths in the mail today. It's such a trip seeing the artist's rendition of my monster. Nice way to head into the weekend!

I didn't touch it. I'm pretty sure RT or any of the other mods would have asked for it to be reduced before arbitrarily cutting it.

Pike, if you'll give me a link, I'll reduce the size and repost it for you. :) I'd really like to see it.

eta: Pike, I looked at your original post in edit mode. Looks like you tried to post it directly from an email pic. That won't work. You need an Internet URL for the site to be able to link up with it. Do you have photobucket or something like that you can use? Alternately, you can email the pic to me , I'll stick it up on my photobucket site and link back to here.

Thanks everyone. Funny thing is that I didn't envision the beast (Duchess) in such detail but leave it to an artist to fill in the gaps. I love what he did and it fits the story rather well.

And a huge shout out to Haggis for cleaning up my compootar illitterate problemms. Someday when I grow up I'll learn how to use this thing for good and not evil.
