I'm pretty much near the end of my novel. Today I discovered the main character in a novel by a friend of mine, which was published in August, has the same last name as my main character.

I have no trouble changing the last name of my character, but does anyone think it's necessary, seeing that the novel is by someone I know, who might actually read my novel once it's published (which obviously won't be for at least a year, if ever).

It's one of those last names with a double meaning related to my character's character flaw. On the other hand, it's also an obvious play on words.

This either means nothing or it's a sign.

Depends on the genre, the story, the MC's role, and a lot of other things. In general I would say a punny surname with a double meaning might seem contrived or trite, might lessen the character's weight. The idea sounds gimmicky, cute. If that's your intent, then keep it, otherwise what's the point? I mean, are you attaching too much significance of the MC's surname to the plot?

Personally, I would change it. If it were something as simple as the first name, say "John" or "Joe", then I wouldn't worry about it. However, since both of you used the same last name to point out the character's flaw and are therefore using the same literary device, I would suggest changing it. Who knows? Maybe you can come up with something more clever.
