Evening all.

I have an unfortunate condition that makes me write about things that happen to me. I spectacularly upset my wife earlier this year with something that I wrote because it was so closely based on my marriage to her.

Problem is, I've just finished writing a film, it was a silly film, and I'd like to get stuck into something else. I had no idea what until my in-laws who I thought I got along with showed some ludicrously unpleasant colours.

While doodling lazily on my office notepad today, I somehow wrote down a skeleton plot about someone who goes a bit ballistic on his in-laws because they became a pineapple in the rectum (if you get what I mean).

Now, unlike so many in-law stories, films, jokes, books, novels, whatevers, etc's... This is not a light hearted story. In fact I can already imagine it being quite grizzly in places as I watch myself... Ahem... I mean, my protagonist avenge his pride.

I guess like the title says... Is there room for more in-law films...

...and secondly...

Though I've given up caring what 'they' think of me, It'll be distubingly clear to anyone in the family what inspired it. Do I proceed with such a project when it could potentially be one of my darkest but most powerful projects to date?

Any and all input on this is appreciated.

Regards,

Rob.

I would say do it, but be prepared for any backlash from family if it's obvious you're writing from personal experience. In-laws have been driving family members nuts for years (mine definitely included), and they will continue to do so. It'll never go out of style.

The reason so many have been made is because so many people can relate to 'challenging' in-laws.

I'd try to keep it as light as possible. You really don't want your in-laws thinking you want to cause them grievous bodily harm. . .then again, their reaction might make one hell of a sequel!

lol @ sequel idea.

Unfortunately, the idea's I have in mind don't leave any room for a sequel but I like the idea anyway.

Maybe I'll go for the full throttle approach and see how I'm doing after sixty pages or so. By that time I'll know what kind of monster I'm creating.

Cheers,

Rob

Dear writers of the AbsoluteWrite forum:

A little word of warning.

Don't leave plot notes laying around the house when it involves the torture and murder of fictionalised versions of your spouses parents.

Between transferring my page of notepad from yesterdays work shirt to todays one, I left it on top of the fridge to get a mouthful of drink.

I then forgot to pick it up before coming out to work. Thusly, my wife found my notes and called me having become quite upset by it.

On this situation, I offer the following statement:

Oooops!

There was a rather tense and upsetting exchange last night when I got home but fortunately it all focussed around the incident which kicked all this mess up in the first place.

While things are slowly heading towards possibly being slightly less awkward in real life, I'm making a start on the new screenplay.

And this is a project that I won't ask Maria (my wife) to check for me. Nooo way ho-say. I'll save that dubious honour for you lot since you gave me the small kick of motivation I needed to start it.

I agree, I think I would like to see a well-written, non-silly darker "in-laws" movie. Too often they devolve into a bad movie of the week melodrama. I would be very interested to see what you come up with.

Just be careful not to clearly identify the in-laws or leave any room for legal action on their part.

Star, don't forget to mention to your wife that you are a writer, so everything is material, and sometimes writing about upsetting circumstances helps to work them out.

It's the writer's cop-out, one of the only perks before you sell or publish.
