I'm writing something for a short story contest, and the contest guidelines state that the genre must be included in the subject line. Problem is, I'm not exactly sure what genre my story would fall under. Here's the basic plot.

A man moves into a new house, and quickly discovers that the government meant for him to live there so that they could watch his every move. In a confrontation with the agent assigned to shadow him, he finds that he was injected with an increasingly lethal poison at birth. He was meant to be a weapon, but the poison has grown out of control. Now, the smallest papercut could release odorless, colorless gases that would kill everyone for miles around.

And I'm not really sure on the specifics from that point on. I was thinking crime/mystery, but that doesn't sound right. Science fiction, maybe?

If anyone has any idea what genre this is, please let me know.

I would think, depending on the treatment, it would suit SF or thriller/suspense.

And something to look at in the guidelines: does the contest cover more than just short fiction? I've come across places that hold a contest covering flash fiction, short fiction, non-fiction and poetry, so when they say 'genre in the subject line', they're referring to the different genres of form (flash, short, non, poetry), not genre in the way we usually think of it (mystery, romance, SF). I don't know if that applies in your case, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

And good luck with your submission! The story sounds interesting. I love the guy walking around filled with poisonous gas, hehe.

I'll throw in a vote for Science Fiction too. Sounds like something in the vein of Phillip K. Dick.

Hi All,

I love sci-fi, however, unless this is set in a futuristic world, this story is more suspense thriller.

Reason being, this sort of technology (biological weapons) are available NOW!!!.

Also, I know I haven't read your story, but if this person is really this contagious, he would just be killed outright by the government. Hell, i'd kill him if I knew about it. So you will have to plug this plot hole. I would say that the agent can't be that sensitive where a paper cut would kill everyone for miles around. You need to figure out a balance to where he is dangerous, but valueable, and unique. If the government "Lost" the recipe and if his blood needed "another" agent to activate it, then I could buy it. But basically, we "bleed" all the time with little scratches and scraps we don't even notice. So it is just not feasible that any release of blood would kill everyone for miles around.

anyways, just my two cents.

good luck with the contest

Mel...
