I have found a load of good books I haven't read and I thought I'd read about everything. You won't usually find these type books at Borders or BAM. You will find these at flea markets and secondhand stores. They will cost you about a quarter or fifty cents each.

Released in the mid to late seventies to the early eighties is a forgotten genre of novellas that should be read again and again today. I realize now I haven't read them before because I was too young. =)

The genre is usually romance or family sagas. The writing is somewhat different and not as tightly written. You will find several errors, but don't let this stop you from reading them. The wonderful stories within make up for any errors. I have enjoyed these much more lately than mainstream romantic fiction which most (IMO) follows a formula. You will find the older novels more risque' and realistic. They are easy to spot on the shelves as they usually have a white cover, but not always. The spine is well worn and these novellas are fat with pages. I am currently reading New Orleans by Miriam Pace. I also recommend Evergreen by Beva Plain and Pleasure's Daughter. I forgot the author to that.

So next time you go to a rummage sale or whatnot, don't forget to look through the mounds of books. Don't pass them up just because they are old. It is worth all the digging!

These days the majority of my book purchases are under those circumstances because money is painfully tight while I write full-time.

I've found a thousand treasures. Lots of obscure older books by writers I wasn't familiar with, some are duds but most are well worth the quarter or dime spent on them. Sometimes I'll choose them just for the charm of their old-fashioned hard cover, dust jacket long gone, and find I have a treasure in my hands. Yes.

I have just finished Cabbagetown by Hugh Garner, about the great depression. A real oldie although Amazon lists a reprint (2002).

Also: A Tenured Professor by John Kenneth Galbraith in which he skewers the university establishment as well as the economic system as only he can do.
