If you need to get fired up for something, what song do you crank up? When I'm driving my girls to basketball, we blast Stricken by Disturbed.

I'm probably a terrible mother, but me 'n' my boyz love rockin' out to the Ramones. Their fave is "I Want to be Sedated." Sounds pretty funny coming out of the ole minivan - we've had some strange looks.
REM's "It's the End of the World as we know it" floats their boat, too. It's really funny hearing a six year old trying to belt out all those words.

one of my guilty 'getting amped' pleasures is also Tool. Anything by them, really.

Amped? Isn't that a company that used to make cassette tapes?

I don't have just one song. I have a whole slew of songs. Some of them in no particular order:

Highway Song by Blackfoot
Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath
Love Machine by Uriah Heep
Master of the Universe by Hawkwind
Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Easy Livin by Uriah Heep
Tears in my Eyes by Uriah Heep
Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath
Dragonfly by Mahogany Rush
Little Sexy Annie by Mahogany Rush
that yodeling song (Hocus Pocus?) by Focus
Buzzard by Armageddon
Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith
Hell Bent for Leather by Judas Priest
Space Station #5 by Montrose
Silver Dollar Forger by Nazareth
Great King Rat by Queen
Polar Nights by the Scorpions
Day of the Eagle by Robin Trower
Running with the Devil by Van Halen
Quadrant 4 by Billy Cobham (excellent guitar by Tommy Bolin)

to name just a few. ;)

To build that 'Kill!!!' fervor, it's
Follow the Leaders by Killing Joke
or
Sweatloaf by Butthole Surfers

If it's a happier vibe, then I'd go
Dub 56 by the Toasters (actually, the Toasters, period, get me grooving)
or
Cumberland Blues by the Grateful Dead (the live version from Europe '72)

A recent discovery, for nights out (yeah, I remember those) is
Flawless (Go to the City) by George Michael

But now it's late night. Debussy, then sleep.

(ETA: A tip of the hat to Shadow's selection of Day of the Eagle -- good one.)

I can think of a couple:

Doolin' Dalton and Desperado, and their respective reprises on the Eagles' Desperado album, 1973.

Also, I try every morning to listen to Boston's self-titled LP, from 1976, the first song of which is my all-time favorite Boston song. The song is More Than A Feeling, and it just wakes me up like little else can.

Candyfloss lyrics

I'm the boy that looks excited
I'm the boy thats gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, I lie to myself
I'm the boy that eats his heart out

I know I should be more careful
I know I should watch where Ive been
Candyfloss and shes a safecracker
She kissed me first and then broke in

We slip and slide on the stay-together landmine
I make my mind up to never be myself
And every time I fake around
I live my life for someone else

Oh-whoa-whoa
Oh-whoa-whoa
Oh-whoa-whoa

She's in the kitchen with bitter diamond drunks
(She's in the way)
I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk cause
(I'm in the way)

I'm the boy with the poetry power
I'm the boy, smells like flowers
Every time I dick around
I live my life like I wasnt invited

Oh-whoa-whoa

She's in the way
I'm in the way

I'm the boy that looks excited
I'm the boy thats gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, she kissed me first
And I'm the boy, don't get me started

I know I should be more careful
I know I should watch where Ive been
Candyfloss, shes a safecracker
She kissed me first, then broke in

Oh-whoa-whoa

This is totally off topic, but I started the thread so . . .

Last night we were eating dinner and I mentioned something about Ozzy Osbourne. My 11-year-old daughter giggled and said "what's his name?" I stared at her indignantly and said slowly "Ozzy Osbourne!" She giggled again and said "That's a stupid name." My wife and I sat in stunned silence, completely unable to come up with any response that might even BEGIN to address the situation. I know she's heard plenty of Ozzy, but I guess the name never registered with her. I'm still debating on whether to ground her or send her to an Ozzfest education camp.

I really cannot stand any member of the Osbourne family. They're drugged up, alcoholic, selfish ingrates who don't deserve to appear on my telly. Especially that bloody wife. She had an affair with a married man (a sin for which she rips into other women today) who regularly committed grave acts of violence against her and justifies it all by saying, "I love him!" Well that's okay then, love, isn't it?

Huh. That's not love. That's addiction. Seems like a family trait.

Okay, III - you can rip on me now. I just can't believe those goobers are role models today.

My favorite bit from The Osbournes is when Ozzy walks into a concert hall for soundcheck. They've got a bubble machine going. He says "Bubbles? Yeah, but even I flinch a bit when I hear them singing "California Uber Alles" or "Jesus is Way Cool". My hubby spent way too much of his youth at CBGB's, and has the hearing loss to prove it. I have this beautiful memory of my hubby speaking to his one day old firstborn - in reverent tones "And this, son, is the Clash" while putting Sandinista on the ole turntable.

Good song. Also, Spoonful is a good one by Clapton. I'm not certain if he did that song while he was with Cream or not, but I'm reminded of it here because it shares a side of a double-LP set called History of Eric Clapton. I love the jam they do on Spoonful. It's pretty cool. And long.

I've looked and I can't see anything that limits this to Rock and Roll. There are three songs that get me amped each and everytime I hear them:

1) The final movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Ode to Joy):
Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuer-trunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!

2) The Sixth Movement of Brahm's German Requiem

Der Tod ist verschlungen in den Sieg.
Tod, wo ist dein Stachel?
Hölle, wo ist dein Sieg?

3) And the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah

I don't suppose I need to post lyrics.

Question: Does anyone else get "amped" by something other than Rock and Roll?

KTC

Thus Spake Zarathustra (Richard Strauss), familiar to most folks as the opening theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWnmCu3U09w&feature=related). What can I say, I'm a sci-fi geek who loves that movie, and that particular piece of music is one of the most stirring things I've ever heard. The crescendo makes chills run up and down my spine, even now while 'listening' to it in my head. (and even more so now that I found that youtube vid)

Question: Does anyone else get "amped" by something other than Rock and Roll?

Sure: The entire Star Wars soundtrack, from the very first movie.

I especially enjoy the opening sequence, and the battle against the Death Star. I love the music from those parts of the tape.

Mars and Jupiter from the Planets Suite
Star Wars theme (natch)
Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers
The theme to 633 Squadron
The Rite of Spring
Spring from 'The Four Seasons' (NOT by Nigel Kennedy)
Symphonie Fantastique
Toccata in Fugue in D Minor

Amped?

hmmm... there are a few.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned Ace of Spades

Chelsea Dagger by the Fratellis also has the same effect.

As does Voodoo Chile but that's mostly just the intro (and the blisteringly powerful guitar solo)

As to non-Rock'n'Roll, Film soundtracks are immensely evocative. Partly because they remind you of the powering crescendo of whatever film it was (and outside the context of the film, they wouldn't have that power) for example, Gladiator. Dah dah de-dah, dah dah de-dah-dah.
And partly because the filmmakers took great lengths to find (or compose) the right music for the big stirring moment at the end of the second reel.
Hence, Ride of the Valkyries does it too (but not the whole thing, obviously)

Speaking of embarrasment, I thought of another one.

And I'm going to share it with you on the condition that you all understand that this is in no way representative of my musical taste.

It's...

...

Eminem.

But only one song. And I can't remember the name of it. It starts "If you had/ one chance/"
That one.
The passion he seems to pour into the words gets me every time.

Nothin' wrong with getting amped from Emmenem. I loved Kid Rock's Devil Without a Cause CD. Bullgod, Fist of Rage, Bawidaba - those songs make my veins explode.

I know this one will sound weird...but Leonard Cohen. He sends me. During the novel marathon this summer...I listened to him for the full 40 hours of the marathon. He looped inside my head. I credit his music for my output.

Ah Leah! by Donny Iris.

I have always loved Ah Leah! My wife always insists that she doesn't remember when it was big...swears she never heard it before. But I love it. One I equate with it is Jenny 867-5309. I don't know if they came out at the same time or not...but I always think of one when I hear the other. Sausalito Summer Nights too. All three are good gettin' ya amped songs.

I thought just now of a couple songs that get me amped, that I don't think I've mentioned yet:

Runnin' With the Devil
Eruption
You Really Got Me
-- All from the Van Halen debut album, dated 1978

Jump
Hot For Teacher
House of Pain
-- All from the Van Halen 1984 album, dated, ironically, 1983

Actually, Strauss' title is a translation into German of the book title, so if we really want to get picky, they're one and the same. :)

Some more good ones that get me rocking:

Unchained -- Van Halen, from the Fair Warning album
Bitch -- The Rolling Stones, from the Sticky Fingers album
Fly Like An Eagle -- The Steve Miller Band, from the Fly Like An Eagle album

And here's a good one, but a very old one:

Calling All Comets (Instrumental) -- Bill Haley and His Comets, from the Rock & Roll Stage Show album
