My mistake. I saw someone else had posted a song, but I guess this isn't really the appropriate venue to do so.

This IS the proper place for posting Songs and Lyrics, Anders, although they seldom garner much responce, even if links are provided. Some of us DO enjoy seeing such, however, and that's worth something.

Feel free to join in.

Yeah, just don't call lyrics a song. That tends to stir things up a bit(well it riles me).

Why? Because a Lyric, by itself, is NOT a Song. It is merely Verse.

A Song, at the very minimum, is defined by the Lyrics, the Melody, and the Chording, which is all competent musicians need to work out a viable arrangement and is usually embodied in a "Lead Sheet" which is commonly used in popular music to capture the essential elements of song without specifying how the song should be arranged or performed, (Although, practically speaking, the Time Signature and the Tempo should be indicated as well).

As Nolita and I discussed in a previous post, such is difficult to reproduce properly on a Forum like this, as Chords are formatted improperly and there is no convenient method for displaying, (or even indicating) Musical Notation, so the only workable alternative, if one is actually trying to present a SONG is to provide a link to the Music at another location, (Whether the Lyric is posted "here" or not).

Hope that answers your question.

This is absolutely the right forum for posting lyrics, arainsb123. But like JRH pointed out, the lyrics threads tend to be the ones with the fewest responses. For example, this thread has had 51 views but only 4 replies, so people do actually read the lyrics but don't always know how to reply.

I'm a new co-mod for this forum and this is one of the areas I'm hoping we can continue to improve - that this would be a place where people can easily post, crit, and enjoy music in its written form. I've got a few ideas, but PM'ed suggestions are always welcome!

I can be lenient though. Even a melody's something to work with. But lyrics sans melody? It's tough. I mean, basically, the lyricist is then asking the reader to climb inside their head and hear what they hear.

No offense intended, but I mean, well...

Take Jim for example. He's not exactly Freddie Mercury, but from his samples I can at least get the gist of where the song is, and where it can go. There used to be this really sweet girl who would post youtube clips of her songs. Nothing fancy, frequently just unaccompanied vocals. But she got the idea and vibe across.

I think people get confused because they see guitar chords on guitar sites and maybe think that's all they need. Really it's easier to get the chords from a melody than vice versa.

In my proposed sticky I mentioned picking a mode and key. I think that's more of a help in the writing process than in the sharing process, but still -- even if it's just a minor pentantonic(a scale so easy, even I can play it;)), it's better than trying to wing it completely. A key would just make it easier to hear it as the writer hears it really.

I suppose I could go on for days. The only serious exception would be rap. Then again, and this is just imho, rap should be rhythmically tighter than lyrics that are sung. Melody can give you much more wiggle room than a mere beat and some loops. Listen to someone like Christina Aguilera, or Celine Dion. They can take one word and run it all over a scale in a single breath. Rappers haven't that luxury.

Okay, I'm seriously considering making this topic a sticky (only in part because I'm basically Nolita's puppet). I think there does need to be a distinction between "songwriting" and "poetry" since there is a different forum for poetry. It's a shame to see some of these posts gather dust simply because they're not reaching the appropriate audience.

How does this sit with everyone?

Sticky: Posting Original Song Ideas

We encourage members to post their song ideas in this forum, regardless of how polished or raw they might be. We also encourage the other members to give honest, respectful feedback on those songs. The “song idea” must contain musical content, whether in the form of articulated musical ideas (chord progression, time signature, etc.) or links to the actual musical production. Lyrics with no musical content more appropriately belong in the Poetry forum where they can be evaluated based on their poetic content.
