I sold a story to a new market this summer and it appeared in the first issue, which came out in August. According to my contract, I was supposed to have my check by mid-October. I emailed the editor the last week of October and haven't received a reply. I happen to know one of the other contributors to that issue, and he checked his records and said he hasn't received payment either.

What should I do at this point? It's not a big payment (just 1c/word), but I'm damned if I'm giving my rights away for nothing. On the other hand, I don't want to end up looking like a jerk if it's all a misunderstanding.

The first thing that I would do - and I have been in the same situation - would be to contact the editor again. If e-mail doesn't work, find a snail mail addy or a phone number. I would inquire about payment, when to expect it, in a most polite way.

If still no response or money, then I would hammer a little harder until I got payment.

And I would research around the 'net how many other writers may not have been paid and if necessary, enlist a little help from someone with more power, like Writer Beware.
