Stardust looks like it might be fun.

Don't tell me the plot. Just say 'yes' if I should go and see it.

Damn! I just came here to write a post of how much I liked the movie.

My opinion? The best fantasy movie I have seen in a while; even better than the last Harry Potter film

I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. Same feeling about the book. It just wasn't as clever as it was trying to be you know?

Still the acting was pretty solid, really liked the kid who played the lead, and always a fan of Claire Danes. Definitely better than the usual fair.

I don't really like fantasy but this one is good -- I enjoyed it a lot. It has the whole fairytale thing down. Robert De Niro alone is worth the ticket price. I know people try to compare this to the Princess Bride but I think they're different. If you like the Princess Bride, though, you will like Stardust.

Cheering you all on!
I loved the movie. It's a lot funnier than it looks in the previews. Liked the book too, but they were very different.

Wow I must totally disagree with Ray (I'm sorry!)! I thought DeNiro was one of the weakest things about the movie. Over acting like crazy, but I've never much thought he could handle comedies (yes that includes Meet the Parents). Whenever he is silly I just don't believe he's in the moment, it always feels a bit like the actor is laughing at the whole thing and a tiny bit embarrassed. The character was awesome and could have been so much better. Just my opinion of course.

Like I said though, the kid who played the lead . . . so good. Different you know? Not just a pretty boy nor really dorky, but a real 3 dimensional person.

/drool! - I loved this movie! I'm glad Neil Gainman wasn't too strict when they were adapting the book because I think Jane Goldman managed to hit the right mark when writing the screenplay.

To quote Gainman 'The book is like a child to me and the motion picture is like it's more expensive, speedier twin brother' He knows what makes a good book and Stardust is a great read however he admits some parts wouldn't work out as a movie and they managed to find a way round that.

The comedic elements in the film are chiefly British with a sense of humour that's not 'in your face'. It tends to be more sly and even Ricky Gervais's cameo made me laugh out loud (even if he's doing the stereotypical Ricky Gervais act).

I wouldn't say the movie is oscar winning in any way (however I do believe Take That are up for Best Song or something similar?) but it is certainly fun (I loooveeed the cameos (although all British cameos)) and I'd recommend to anyone who wants to leave the cinema happier than they were going in.

And I disagree with you. :) His role is totally tongue-in-cheek. I agree that he overacted, but so did Michelle Pfeiffer, the Prince, Sienna Miller, and just about everyone else except for Claire Dane (whom I actually found a bit of a bore in the film) and the lead guy. I think De Niro was perfectly fun and silly for that role. I would have played up the role like that if I were in his place.

And again I must disagree. Okay I agree Michelle was a bit over the top, but I felt everyone else brought truth to their rather larger than life roles. Yes the characters aren't "believable", I mean it isn't exactly a realistic story, but we don't need the actors to add yet another level of over the top-ness seeing as the characters are already way out there. De Niro seemed to be winking at the audience the whole time a la "Isn't this funny?" I am from the school of thought that you play comedy just as seriously as drama. For example, one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time was Jake Gyllenhaal singing Dreamgirls on SNL ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3832355600819882297 ). He did it totally dead pan, and despite the fact that he was singing in falsetto, actually was surprisingly good. To me that is what makes something funny. When the actor isn't in on the joke. When he/she just thinks they are being normal.

Yes the characters were larger than life, but the lead kid, the guy who played the evil Prince and Claire, they really had truth behind their roles. Michelle and De Niro, in my opinion, not so much.

I love it when the actors seem to have a lot of fun playing the characters. I have no problem with that. ;)

I really didn't see De Niro or Pfeiffer's over-the-top acting as out of character. I dislike Jim Carey, Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell for exactly that reason, so I'm not immune to over-acting. But in this case I really enjoyed De Niro and Pfeiffer. The "deadpan" type of comedy works, too, but in this case, these are larger-than-life fantasy characters and I find De Niro and Pfeiffer entertaining and enjoyable, and not out of character at all -- the campiness worked for me. I also enjoyed the guy who played Tristan, but found Claire Dane stiff and boring -- she could have added a bit more spunk and energy to that role -- she is, literally, the star.

Well we shall agree to disagree sir. I think De Niro was over acting, not that anything that was asked of him was too much (the dancing etc, I found the directorial choices just fine) but that the way he decided to do such things I believe weren't the strongest of acting choices.

I thought it was a great big steaming bowl of "okay". More mature and less obnoxious than a movie like Ella Enchanted but not up to par as an adult fantasy. It was an enjoyable enough distraction but a few weeks later and I remember almost nothing about the movie itself. I took my girls ages 12, 11, and 9 to see it and they enjoyed it. Wait for the DVD, though.
