In Stephen King's book On Writing, he mentions some of his work comes from a what if? idea. Example:

What if vampires invade a town in Maine?
What if a writer has a car accident and is resuced by a deranged fan?
What if a burial ground for pets had certain powers?

With that in mind, what's your what if? For my next book, I'm thinking what if old British myths and legends gradually became real in the present day?

Over to you...

What if a Southamerican president doesn't have contact with the real world, rather been cheated and a puppet of his own cabinet?

What if de-powered superheroes (and villains) got their powers back after fifteen years without them?

What if a girl was brought back from the dead because of something she knows, only she can't remember anything?

What if the legend of a local Native American prophecy turned out to be real?

What if a deep crevice opened up beneath the Pacific Ocean and drained half of the worlds ocean?

What if a really creepy guy walked into a five and dime, kibitzed with the regulars, bought a pair of women's cowboy boots and walked out?

Hey, I know that guy.

I have to say, you guys have some great what-ifs. Some are hysterical!

What if the winning entry, for the largest pumpkin at the county fair, kept growing... off the vine?

WIP #1 - What if the Elizabethans discovered magic and so only Britain and one small Middle-Eastern region knew how to produce it?

WIP #2 - What if the evil Dark Lord usurper wizard got to tell the story instead of the plucky young hero? (sort of)

What if a grief support center existed but was run by a man who refused to accept the death of his own loved one and encouraged his fellow mourners to kill people to save people, trying to transcend grief through murder? What if your family became its victims?

Hey, I'm still working on it.

I like it. I sort of wonder what "transcend grief through murder" means, exactly, but this is exactly the kind of high-concept stuff I enjoy as a reader.
