Speaking as a reader, some of these wouldn't interest me much--the Inspector Chess, especially. Det. Serendipity would be cool if it was funny or if the detective plot was secondary to something else, like a romance.

Of course, the real value here isn't in the specific examples themselves, but in the ideas they might spark in us.

I love the first one, though. Love it.

The one about a chess grandmaster who analyzes crimes based on chess game strategy has "Uncle Jim" written all over it.

The only one that would interest me as a reader is:

A distrustful detective whose conviction is that everyone, except his comatose mother, is living a lie—and who is correct.

And that's just because it's ripped off from House. (Except House would distrust his comatose mother as well.) :)

Interestingly, in an interview, Hugh Laurie opined that the character House is based on Sherlock Holmes, and pointed out the similarity of the names, and that "Houses," which is more analogous to "Homes," wasn't available because it's not an actual name.
