Cool opportunity, that would've been fun. I admire his imagination, lots. His take on the Divine, maybe not so much ... but nice images, brave writer. The movie adaptation, maybe not so bold.

So ... What's his daemon look like?

someone says the kill God, or a god, or something like that. What the hell is the big deal, is this true? if so, is it teh christian god? or some other kind of allusion to god?

At the end of the 3rd book they kill God, which is apparently the ultimate God

Well, how do you know the e-mails are 'stupid' if you haven't read the book they're upset about?

What if ("what if ...") Pulman suggested that after 'killing God' ... now the next group to kill is the Jewish people (because they're 'God's Chosen People' ... right?)

Then the e-mails wouldn't be quite so 'stupid' in protesting the book, right?

No, Pullman doesn't say to kill Jewish people.

Actually, whatever his personal beliefs or attitudes, I wasn't sure the character Pullman has his heroes kill is really THE 'God' anyway, for sure.

Do please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it suggested that the Creator has abandoned Creation, and they assassinate some senile poseur instead? The first book is amazing (imo) but the later two sag sadly ...

Nevermind that the Knife they use to kill this pseudo-deity with is infact DESTROYING ALL THE UNIVERSES ... so that the god-killing technology they embrace is in fact WORSE and MORE STUPID than the damage the fantasy-world Church per se is doing to anyone.
Yeah: the Inquisition is BAD, their daemon-amputating pogrom is WORSE ...

If Pullman had made it about the Umma (the Muslim peoples) rather than the Church, it would be reviled as racist, I think ...

I hear they're cleaning up the MOVIE and removing the anti-Church issues because the Hollywood fatcats want to reel in the Big Box Office.

So much for the principles of the ... well, so much for Pullman getting HIS artist's message out, undistorted.

It was sad when people attacked THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, sad when people player-hate MEL GIBSON (Alcoholism: a disease to be pitied after all) and sad that Pullman's work has to be white-washed for the BOX OFFICE $$$.

Remember: it wasn't white-washed for the people PROTESTING the books (think long and hard about that one, until you agree with it. Or explain why it WAS ... but it wasn't. I can explain why it WASN'T and I bet no one can explain how it WAS)

It was white-washed for the almighty Box Office $$$.

If I'd met Pullman (which is cool you did) ... maybe at my worst I would've slapped his daemon upside the head.

But no one here will tell me what his daemon looks like! It'd be sad if I accidently slapped some old lady's poodle or yorkie by mistake!

That's great! Was it the State Street branch? I live really close to there. I was actually in Vienna last week, desperate for a book, any book in English, and found the Golden Compass in a bookstore. It was a fun read, and now I wish I'd been around to see the author. (I also read book two, but didn't like it as much)

Awesome. I'm so jealous. That guy's got guts of steel.

I liked the idea in the story. I think it would have been even more successful and less potentially anti-christian if Pullman had actually created his own unique religion in the world. He has guts, I admit, but it would have been much safer to do it that way. That way, the ending wouldn't be as problematic as it is, to some people. Personally, I loved everything about all 3 books. The movie.................let's leave it at that, shall we?

i did read his books, and i did like the story.

and his characters.

and his plot.

i am Christian, and though it bugged me a little that he "killed" god, it didn't ruin it for me.

but i didn't like the work. i can tell the emotion of the writer at times, and the book emanated anger from almost every page. if he got rid of that then i would refer it.
