Small town sheriff in Tennessee uses public funds to purchase private equipment by falsifying the accounting records to classify the expense as supplies.

Felony or Misdemeanor? Anyone know? Anyone know a website where I could find that out?

Probably a felony embezzlement, but you really have to check local laws and ordinances to be sure. Besides, the decision as to whether to charge an individual with a felony or misdemeanor charge is often a matter of legal negotiation. Might also depend on the amount of money involved.

If you are committed to a setting in the state of Tennessee, at a particular moment in history, if not present, this is discoverable. Research is your friend. Call a county attorney's office in Tennessee.

While I believe it would depend on the amount of funds "embezzeled", I'm leaning toward felony.

You might check with the law schools at Vanderbuilt or Tennessee. They might be able to help you out if you tell them you're an author and trying to gather facts for a book.

Embezzling funds can be either, depending on state laws. It depends on how much he embezzled. As a rule, stealing government funds has no statute of limitations, so you could go after him years after the crime.

It also may depend on political motives for prosecution.

If the Sheriff or police officer is "in good" with the powers that be, they'll look the other way. If not, well...can we say railroad?

If others are involved, it is often a felony to conspire to commit a misdemeanor, but like others say, ordinances vary by area.
