A style guide I am using states that numbers under one hundred (100) should be spelled out: five, eighty-six, etc. -- and that larger numbers should stay in numeral form: 246, 1300, etc.

My question has to do with dialogue.

Can numbers remain numerals in dialogue...as in:

"I bought more than 250 party favors," she announced.

This seems wrong to me, but I am not sure.

I write them out in dialogue. One reason is to avoid confusion over what exactly is being said. Your example could be read any of these ways:

"I bought more than two hundred and fifty party favors."

"I bought more than two hundred fifty party favors."

"I bought more than two-fifty party favors."
