The Kid (who's not a child) often watches movies in bunches, with a theme. She's asked us for the titles of decent serial killer movies, in particular ones that focus more on the killer than on the cops, his/her apprehension, trial, etc. I think she's particularly interested in the lives of the killers--what made them the way they are or were.

She makes the distinction between serial killing (multiple murders over a period of time) and mass murder (multiple murders at the same time).

Her dad and I made a short list, but I bet you all know some little gems. What can you recommend?

Maryn, hoping to add to her list

I do that too.

Well, Red Dragon seems likely.

In that case, have her READ any Thomas Harris book. That's something he does very well (particularly Red Dragon or Black Sunday)

So do law enforcement (or shrinks or whoever). They seperate them as Serial killers and Spree killers.

Red Dragon. Well, you may as well have the Hannibal Lector box set :)

Would Death Wish qualify? I rather think it would, y'know.

Although, then you could argue that Magnum Force qualifies too.

Hmmm... not many occur to me.
There are serial killer films based on actual serial killers (Zodiac, son of sam) but I don't remember them being all that good.

Oh, I'm such a weird mom--I read Red Dragon aloud to the kids when they were in high school. (You think they'd have tolerated being read to if I'd kept to age-appropriate material?) I did cough over a word or two, and later learned our son would get up in the night with a flashlight, find the book, and figure out what those bad words were.

Here's my list so far:

American Psycho - A superficial Manhattanite successfully hides his series of murders from his so-called friends
Badlands - Based on the Starkweather-Fugate killing spree of the 1950's, in which a young teen and her older boyfriend start the killing with her family
Blue Velvet - A young man and his girlfriend find evidence of a killer in their town
The Bone Collector - A paralyzed detective uses his knowledge of NYC to track a serial killer
The Boston Stranger - True story of killer whose victims seem randomly chosen
Breakdown - The car breaks down. The wife disappears, and the trucker who gave the wife a lift claims he’s never seen her
Copycat - An agoraphobic expert must help police find a killer copying the world’s most famous murders, using her book as a guideline
Day of the Jackal - An assassin must kill many people to avoid detection and succeed at his mission of killing DeGaulle
Dirty Harry - Renegade cop’s unconstitutional methods set a killer free--and give him a grudge
Dressed to Kill - A cheating housewife is murdered by another patient seeing the same psychiatrist
Ed Gein, a.k.a. In the Light of the Moon - True story of Gein, who dug up bodies and made things of the remains, then ran out of crafting supplies.
The Eyes of Laura Mars - A fashion photographer sees what a serial killer sees as he commits his murders, but the one cop who sort of believes her can’t identify the killer
Gacy - True story of John Wayne Gacy, who entertained kids as a clown, while picking up, sexually torturing, then murdering young men and burying their remains on his suburban property
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - True story of Henry Lee Lucas, who seemed like a mild-mannered low-key guy dating his roommate’s sister, but routinely thrill killed
Jennifer Eight - A burned-out cop moves to a small town, only to become embroiled in solving a cold case of a serial murderer of blind girls
Kalifornia - A couple researching the sites of serial murders shares a ride with another couple, one of whom is a serial killer himself
Klute - Small town detective seeking missing man finds the prostitute who may have information is being stalked by a killer
Manhunter (original version of Red Dragon) - A troubled FBI agent tries to find a pattern in a serial killer’s choice of victims
The Mean Season - Local reporter’s girlfriend is kidnapped after he does a story on murderer, who calls to report he’ll kill again
Monster - True story of Aileen Wuornos, a hooker who killed men she picked up
Natural Born Killers - Young couple goes on a killing spree, starting with her abusive father, leaving one witness each time, and become folk heroes
The Night of the Hunter - Classic oldie about a serial killer who hides in plain sight, marrying a widow and trying to coerce her kids into telling him where their real dad hid the proceeds from a robbery
No Country for Old Men - soon to be released, getting good buzz
No Way to Treat a Lady - Sly killer taunts police, committing his murder is assorted disguises. Comedic.
Red Dragon (remake of Manhunter)
Se7en - Killer’s victims embody the seven deadly sins
Silence of the Lambs - The FBI needs the help of a brilliant psychopath to catch a killer, and he only responds to a vulnerable rookie
The Stepfather - A man marries widows with children, seeking the perfect family, and when they prove human, kills then and moves to the next one
The Talented Mr. Ripley - A young man sent to Europe to convince a rich playboy to come home kills him and assumes his life
Time After Time - H.G. Wells inadvertently looses Jack the Ripper on modern San Francisco

Yes. That's not a bad film, but I'm not sure I'd call it a serial killer film. Since it's more a conglomeration that does it. Rather like a more mercenary Texas Chainsaw Massacre. :)
Copycat - An agoraphobic expert must help police find a killer copying the world’s most famous murders, using her book as a guideline
I forgot about that one. Good call.
Day of the Jackal - An assassin must kill many people to avoid detection and succeed at his mission of killing DeGaulle
Again, not really a serial killer. He kills where necessary so that he can earn his pay by offing king frog.
Dirty Harry - Renegade cop’s unconstitutional methods set a killer free--and give him a grudge
I mentioned Magnum Force up there somewhere. But you could, in actuality, have almost any Dirty Harry film as a serial killer film. Since most of them have 'em. (Apart from that one with the gang on Alcatraz)
Kalifornia - A couple researching the sites of serial murders shares a ride with another couple, one of whom is a serial killer himself
That's good too!
Especially for those who say that Brad Pitt can't act.
Manhunter (original version of Red Dragon) - A troubled FBI agent tries to find a pattern in a serial killer’s choice of victims
I preferred Red Dragon to be honest, but as you like.
Se7en - Killer’s victims embody the seven deadly sins
TOP OF THE LIST!!!!!

Sorry, I started rambling a bit.

The Bone Collector was good. It was theme/mutiple killing & great detective work...not sure if it would qualify as serial....

Ray?

I think it was a serial killer... the killings didn't happen all at once. It was pretty good, I remember, and the first time I paid notice to Angelina Jolie.

Loved Se7en but couldn't watch it again.

Someone mentioned Dirty Harry... it was based on the Zodiac killer in the 70s. The movie Zodiac (with Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal) was very good, too (less of a murder thriller than a CSI type mystery).

I wouldn't call Mr. Ripley a serial killer movie -- Ripley only kills when he needs to... so he's more like a criminal James Bond than a serial killer.

Raise your hand if you're scared of Maryn now. :hi: :scared:

Silence of the Lambs - Although it focused a bit more on the police than Red Dragon

Great list, Maryn! I would add:

Blow Out--featuring the "Liberty Bell Killer," who ice-picks that symbol onto his victims.

M--When the cops can't catch a child-killer, the criminal underground steps in to track him down.

The Bad Seed--speaking of child-killers, this would be the flipside of the coin. A little girl kills anyone who gets between her and what she wants. Not a thrill or impulse killer though, so despite a number of victims might not be what you want.

The Hitcher (1986 version, not the recent remake)--Rutger Hauer is evil incarnate as a gruesome serial killer who dares an innocent young man to stop him.

And of course, don't forget all those Friday 13th type slasher movies. :) Today 12:23 PM
Or all the Scream films that made fun of them, while also getting in a slash or two.

Speaking of serial killers... Have you watched Dexter?

Dexter is my fav show these days! They did such a good job researching the psychological issues involved in the making of a killer.

Funny enough, I had a dream last night that I was in a Friday the 13th movie.
