An agent asked me to mail in my full manuscript and I haven't signed with him, would it be proper to include a SASE for his reply? What should I do? (he's a very reputable agent...the work is copyrighted.)

Dear Agent,

Thank you for taking the time to read some of my work. As you requested, here is the manuscript for my novel, TITLE.

I am including a SASE for your reply, but please feel free to call or email if that is easier. My contact information is included with my signature.

I do not need my materials returned (unless you do).

Thanks,

K-Mark's letter sounds great.

(he's a very reputable agent...the work is copyrighted.)

Your work is copyrighted from the moment you put pen to paper, and you can create problems for the publisher if your copyright date is older than the date they intend to publish it (which it inevitably will be.)

(Check out #2 of this blog post.)

I'm no lawyer, but I don't believe there is any real problem with a publisher taking out a second copyright registration. I believe there's an extra box on the form they have to fill out.

I remember a fairly recent blog post by...somebody...where it was mentioned that it was more than that. Unfortunately, as you can tell by the incredible amount of detail in that first sentence, I can't remember where I read that. So I'm willing to concede I could be mistaken.

But it does brand one an amateur to have a copyright notice on their manuscript (at least in the US).

K-Mark's letter is dead on. The only thing I'd add is a copy of any correspondence (the query letter you sent at least) just to refresh their memory.
