The Shining special edition was released a few days ago and my wife gave it to me for my birthday. We started watching the special features.

If you're as big a fan of The Shining as I am, you'll love it, one of my top-five favorite movies of all time. Disc One has the movie, sharp and clear in the correct aspect ratio with trailer. It also has commentary (not by Stanley Kubrick, alas) by the steadicam operator and film historian John Baxter.

Disc Two offers three featurettes and Vivian Kubrick's The Making of the Shining. These are most excellent insights into the film.

The whole DVD is awesome, something I've waited for for a long time, especially since our only copy of The Shining is on a worn-out store-bought VHS tape.

The Shining is a strange film for me. It's an expertly made film and I don't think anyone could say it's not a great horror film, but I still have a problem with it. There's no heart to it, no emotion. And as great as Jack Nicholson is, the viewer knows he's a nut from the first scene. There's no sense of gradual breakdown from him so it ends up inevitable he'll flip.

BUT, it still has power and is a very frightening film in certain places.

"Come and play with us." :D
