Advice for a beginner

I am hoping someone could give me advice on getting started with short story publication. I have been researching a few sites pertaining to novel publication. I have no special training or education in creative writing and I have only written research papers for school. I have written for myself however, all that work saw the bottom of the trash can. The creative writing classes I would like to take, are offered during the hours I have to work. I want to hone my skills and I would like any advice for a beginner on anything pertaining to this subject. I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to rejection so I won't be offended if anyone tells me to just hang it up. Thanks, Jenn :)

There are online classes available. Try writingclasses (dot) com (Gotham Writer's Workshop).

Share Your Work (SYW) forums on this board are wonderful. You can put a sample of your writing on the boards and see what people say (thick skin is an advantage there, though most crits are very gentle). I have learned a lot from SYW.

Thanks so much. I do have something I am working on and I hope to have some time next week to start writing. I have been bogged down with mid-terms this past week, including today. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to go to college. I think my brain is about to explode! I know I have the research part of writing down, I have gathered so much useless information and maybe now I will finally be able to put it to good use :eek:)
