I'm really not sure how to go about doing this, but am hoping you guys might be able to give me some suggestions. I'm writing a book about our bike journey around the USA and Mexico. It's a narrative where I explain various events that happened to us and what life was like for our family as we traveled on our bicycles. I kept an online journal throughout hte trip and am using that as a base for the book.

One day I kind of went off the deep end, I guess. We were in Death Valley and it was outrageously hot and something happened that just cracked me up. I wrote a story about it that was quite hilarious, but doesn't relate to much of anything. (You can read it here:http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=rzyi&page_id=42878&v=j7)

Anyway - we got more comments on that one story than any other entry we made. People have sent us oatmeal, they've served us oatmeal when we stayed with them, they've made jokes, etc.... That story seems to stay with people a lot. So I want to include in my book. But it doesn't fit. Any suggestions on how I can get it in there somehow? Maybe a letter my mom or something like that?? I'm just not getting any flashes of inspiration about how to get it in there!

Unbelieveable photos, very nice. As for the story, I'd simply include it exactly how you blogged about it, in chronological style. This is why people read/write nonfiction, to vicariously live and experience events that we may never get to experience, otherwise.

Thanks for your kind words about the photos - Death Valley was a pretty amazing place!

I'd like to include this story pretty much as is, but it won't just go in like this. Would it be tacky to say it was a letter to Mom?? But then John's rebuttal doesn't fit. Maybe I should just put some kind of intro in there talking about how there were times when we went loony - and this is an example? I had originally thought about interspersing journal entries throughout the book, and that one would be one journal entry. But I've redesigned the book to get rid of the journal entries, so that won't work now.

Nancy,

You know how good novels grab you right off the bat by throwing you in the thick of things, without backstory? The show now, explain later thing is used so often because it works. People just aren't patient enough (at least I'm not) to plod through set-up to see if it's gonna get good.

Since you've gotten such great response to the story, it might serve in the same way if you use it as a stand alone chapter, first thing, and as-is, to hook the reader. Now thoroughly engaged and endeared to you and your family as people, the reader will happily settle in for the more leisurely unwinding of your chronicle.

Hmmm... I never thought of using that first!! I've got what I think is a good hook, but I'll certainly think about using this story. The thing with this story is that it is totally off-the-wall and over-the-top. I have no idea where it came from - I was laying there trying to sleep as my hair was bothering the heck out of me and it dawned on me just how hilarious the situation was.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to say that you have one cool family! With effective promotion and tease marketing using your pictures, this book should sell, sell, sell! I think many parents will be very inspired by your journeys!

Thanks Triplets!! I do think we have a good story and are hoping to capitalize on it. And even better is that we are planning another major journey from Alaska to Argentina so we will have a ready-made opportunity for press coverage. All we need to do now is figure out a way to get the ball rolling for all that to happen!!
