I need ideas for sexual things other than sex. I have two characters who aren't ready to, um, fornicate--but I want sensuality to be in the air. I was thinking... dancing, maybe. Any other ideas for sitautions, perhaps where touching occurs, that might cause people to get a little heated up?

Dancing - yes!! The tango. :)

Hmm, other stuff. Cooking together is a good one. Lots of opportunities to bump into one another, accidentally touch, etc.

Oh, cooking. In one of those tiny aisle kitchens.... with lots of steam....

'Here taste this...'

That has potential.

If you wanted to be in public, you could always use a crowded bus as an excuse to bump into one another, or most any public affair that would have large crowds. Concert, fair, rodeo.

A sport, or some kind of physical activity, that could involve a lot of physical contact, a healthy dose of adrenaline, and the competitive urge.

Massage comes to mind, though it it may be 'more than you want' as it can easily end up being foreplay to The Real Thing.

Anyone want a massage???

Beach Volleyball! And bikini tops that are about to burst apart!

I see my husband wasn't the only one glued to the coverage of Olympic women's beach volleyball.

I was thinking of something with more possibility for body contact - like one-on-one basketball, with body checks aplenty.

how about tag football with friends. They could fall on each other. . .

or have someone moving to another house or something. They work up a sweat.

what about running through the rain? For instance.... One time i was at a park with a guy I liked... it started to pour, we ran back to the car, laughing the whole time and getting soaked, too. Instead of getting in the car, we looked at each other (still giddy) and just ended up kissing. Definitely made my heart pound at the time!

They could go spelunking! I remember spelunking in some lava caves. There are bits where you just have to help each other along. No choice, really. One has to pull the other up, or better yet, push the other from behind. :D

A swordfight.

Seriously. Best damn foreplay ever.

I just wrote a scene like that. Patti's right. I never would have thought it before, but....hooo damn.

Basketball. Lots of bumping and brushing, taunting... it's good stuff. :)

Contact sports are always a good fallback when other contact isn't forthcoming.

I think playing pool is good.

Especially if one person has to stand behind the other one to help them learn to hold the pool cue right and hit the ball.

They could do more than one thing, be on a resort, do some swimming, snorkeling, jet ski racing, tennis, kayaking, martial arts even (might be a bit too energetic)

Or perhaps a slightly lower tempo, sailing lessons just before dusk, climb a nice big tree, run along the beach on the tide line and fall down laughing.

A Different Perspective

Radical Proposition: what they do is far less important than how/why they do it. Think action last, character first.

So, important questions at this stage might be: What are the characteristics of your character so far? What do they like? What have they shared or not shared or may want to share? In what settings have they been or are they about to be based on their emotional path to this moment? How purposeful or helter-skelter are they, based on what we've seen? In short, why might they be ready or not quite ready for intimacy?

And if this is not yet the moment by virtue of how they feel together, then an accidental or incidental coming together by, say, dance or hair washing or some other suggested event may seem forced, and in any case will take them in an entirely different direction than a more purposeful union. Maybe that's OK, especially if you let character lead rather than a preordained story line and wish to explore how love goes or founders based on glancing action. It's just that the logic of progression changes when the question is "who are they?" rather than "what should they do?"

So say they enjoy music and concerts, but tangle some with differing tastes. Say she brings him some new sheet music of a favorite composer. Say it’s a rainy night. Say he has just started the fireplace. Say they share the bench at his old piano. Say they laugh at it so out of tune, but her passing thought is some of his life is the same. Say he struggles with the piece, liking she brought it but not especially liking it, smirking and smiling. Say she interrupts him and plays a few bars to show him it’s good and it is to him under her hands and he says so. Say her hair is damp and frazzled. Say she is flushed making her point or is it the waking fire. Say they sit together on the bench a wee bit short for two. Say their elbows and sides touch …

I am kinda liking the caving idea. It has an element of instant privacy should things... progress.

And p.s. sometimes character can come second and still work out fine. Diversity thy name is porn ;)

There's always the classic "Where'd you get that scar?" scene - like in Lethal Weapon III (I think it was three - the one where Rene Russo comes on the scene)

Or doing something like working on a car together - fond high school memory right there (yeah, I confess, a bit of a grease monkey way back before computers took over cars)

Character 1st or 2nd continued...

Of course, erotica or otherwise, plot can lead or follow, character lead or follow and either way bring commercial success. Examples abound in all corners. I see now this lady doth protest too much on how character should lead, though I did preface my sermon with the disclaimer, "radical proposition," realizing it is probably a minority if not controversial view.

Nevertheless, it would help thread readers to know a bit about your characters and their path before they pop out recommended settings/situations for the erotic encounter, no? Are not the questions posed still pertinent at least in your head if you prefer not to answer here? To reiterate: what are the characteristics of your character so far? What do they like? What have they shared or not shared or may want to share? In what settings have they been or are they about to be based on their emotional path to this moment? How purposeful or helter-skelter are they, based on what we've seen? In short, why might they be ready or not quite ready for intimacy? Surely these play a role in where your characters go next, erotic encounter or not?
