Do mainstream mags ever publish pre-industrial fiction or do they tend to want exclusively modern-day contemporary? What about magical realism?

RD, hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but these days mainstream mags publish virtually no fiction.

I'm not sure what you mean by mainstream, but there are plenty of magazines -- print and otherwise -- that publish that sort of thing. It depends on what your definition of mainstream is, I suppose.

Yes! I agree - I often tell people half my work as a writer is marketing, half writing. Finding the right place to submit my work is at least half the battle!!!!!!
