Do mainstream mags ever publish pre-industrial fiction or do they tend to want exclusively modern-day contemporary? What about magical realism?

I'm not sure what you mean by mainstream, but there are plenty of magazines -- print and otherwise -- that publish that sort of thing. It depends on what your definition of mainstream is, I suppose.
