Just read about this site, they list dogs in shelters (also post photos), who are on doggie death row, and how many days they have left. Depressing to read, but many dogs have thankfully been saved by dogsindanger.com.

It's a crazy situation. Too many people buy pedigrees--and even a good many of these pedigrees show up in shelters because the owners had no idea how to train, or even know why they wanted a dog.
I have one pedigree, a beagle, that I rescued from a person who was about to take it to a shelter. My other dog came directly from a shelter. I've a couple of cats who showed up as kittens in my back yard.

Our local shelter is participating, as soon as we're moved into our new house we're heading down there to pick up Sparky (if he doesn't already have a new home)!
Grr, it makes me crazy - so many wonderful animals waiting for homes and poeple would rather run puppy mills to get a fast buck!
Thanks for the link, Shelley - it's a great reminder that you can find fantastic companions at any local shelter or rescue operation. My own cats are strays I rescued in my back yard, and every dog I ever owned was a rescue. They seem to give you that extra dollop of love and appreciation!

Don't know, but there is a program where you're given a cat trap to catch feral cats. You're given a list or coupon for participating vets to neuter them. However, one can always go to a shelter and adopt a kitten or cat.

Rich, we have a beagle now, too--I thought of you when we got him last year. He's one of the bigger sizes (15") and is mostly black and tan. He's really great with the grandkids.

That's right...in the year we've had him, I think he's only made a few sounds that could be considered a 'bark.' Beagles have a huge range of vocal expressions, but regular barking isn't part of the program. lol

I've been around a few Beagles (No, strictly platonic) before I got this one. Butr I nevr heard them grunt. Do any of your Beagles grunt when they want something? The grunts are almost like sentences--close to how a chimpanzee would express itself.

Darby grunts, too, especially if he's trying to get comfortable. But he also does that when he's really trying to communicate something.
I never realized how downright intelligent beagles are! Darby understands so much...and we actually have to spell out quite a few words. Saying 'leash,' 'walk,' 'outside,' 'treat,' and 'do you want?' really get him going.
Also, if I start to say, "I think" and don't finish the sentence fast enough, he goes crazy! To him, that means that I think my husband is home and Darby loves to greet him--loudly. Thank goodness we live in the country. I can only imagine the complaints we'd get if we lived in town.

My family got Owen(the new puppy) from the humane society. Had to walk through fire to get him, too.

we got a brand new used dog from the Humane Society. He's been worth every penny, and five years later he is almost completely rehabilitated.
I just went and looked at this heartbreaking site. Just about every kind of dog I grew up with is represented. Blueticks, Boxers, Dobermans, the first two perfect companions.

I just can't look...I don't even think I'll be able to go to the shelter and choose a new cat when the time comes because here in FL they get 3 days and I'd leave with all of them. I might have to just send my husband to make the choice (of course, he'd probably come home with all of them too). I remember once a humane society wanted to show a commercial that showed a cute kitten in front of a pile of dead cats and dogs, and it was banned. I don't think it should have been because that's the reality...it might make people think before breeding.

I agree, I think seeing the truth might make people think twice. In the past 18 years I've owned four labs, every one was unwanted. Each proved to be the greatest companion I could ever ask for. Years back I helped at the local Human Shelter but couldn't take it after a couple of months. My heart broke for each and every animal. The only good thing was each was kept for months to try to find it a new home. My next pet will come from a shelter and I too know I will want to bring them all home with me. I'm such an animal sucker I've even got the squirrels waiting for me to feed them.......and I do.
Our Animal Control here has many nice animals. In a few months I would have given one of them Red's empty slot had Slim not come along.
