If you had to teach an American Lit. course to college-level students, and you could only choose five books, which books would you choose?

Me?

The Scarlet Letter
Billy Budd
The Sun Also Rises
The Hamlet
Slaughterhouse Five

My five would be:
The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne)
An American Tragedy (Dresier)
Little Women (Alcott)
The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald)
Some Came Running (Jones)

But it would be hard to stop there; I could think of many, many more.
