Marketing After contract Nonfiction

What are some thoughts on how best to market the book after it is published or in contract. I am working on a non-fiction piece and once I am in contract I have been told that a writer must be prepared to market their own work etc. Any formal places that I can go to retain assistance in regards to this subject and/or ideas? Are there professionals other than PR folks that I should contact who help writers sell their books?
