...Simon?

The radio just told me that in the new Star Trek filum, young scotty will be played by... Simon "Shaun of the Fuzz" Pegg.

Shall I be the first to point out that he's not scottish?

Oh no. Simon looks nothing like Scotty!

Just one small niggle - Scotty never went to Starfleet Academy. I can't remember the episode in the Classic series, but there was a conversation in which he said he had been a civilian engineer who had moved over into Starfleet later in his career.

Oh oh:

Casting news:

Spock (Zachary Quinto)
Uhura (Zoe Saldana)
Chekhov (Anton Yelchin)
and
John Cho as Sulu

John Cho? The only resemblance between Takei and Cho is that they're both Asian. Other than that, different body type, different height, different facial shape, etc. I guess all Asians do look alike.

Zachary Quinto plays the bad guy Sylar in Heroes.

John Cho was in Harrold and Kumar Go To White Castle as well as the American Pie movies.

Don't know who the other two are.

Oh boy there is a new Star Trek movie in the making? :( Sigh...I don't think it's going to be a good thing to replace all the classic actors...:(

Well, the problem with the Classic actors is -- they've gotten old or died. (I'm sorry, but there just comes an age when you can no longer convincingly play action heroes!) And digitally-created humans still look ... well, digital.

So I'm okay with younger actors "recreating" the characters -- all other things being equal. Great script, a thorough understanding of the characters, a director who has a feeling for the Star Trek Universe, all that.

Thing is, Roddenberry is gone. And however responsible and respectful of his vision and legacy his stewards have been, he's no longer at the helm.

That's what really makes the difference.

I caught wind of the recent castings this morning on Aint It Cool News, and at first I was also skeptical because the Scotty I remember is the podgy, grey-haired engineer who debuted in The Wrath of Kahn. Then I did a bit of Googling...

stos-pieceofaction-scotty.jpg

That is Simon Pegg. That expression belongs to Simon Pegg. That image is essentially trademark Simon Pegg.

Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott is Simon Pegg.

P.S. On a less significant note, Sulu's casting is so far off the mark it would take centuries travelling at maximum warp for it to get anywhere close to the mark.

I can't see the image you posted OddButInteresting. Can you link to it instead?

I agree with you Ce Ce, it's harder now that Roddenberry is gone to do anything on the Star Trek front. I didn't like Enterprise and didn't like Voyager much, but DS9 and The Next Generation I loved. :)

Link for thee: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/images/2007/stos-pieceofaction-scotty.jpg

and...

Looks more like Bruce Campbell to me.

"Seen" to thou. However, the resemblance is confined only to that image. As much as I love Brucie, he aint no Scotty.

If they can cast Heath Ledger as The Joker, they can most certainly cast Simon Pegg as Scotty. Everything we've seen and heard of Ledger's performance so far has transcended everyone's doubts. I expect the same of Pegg.

More Casting News

From the TrekToday site:

The ink is on the contracts: Chris Pine will play Jim Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek movie, Karl Urban will play Leonard McCoy, and veteran designer John Eaves will be illustrating some of the ships for the film. But don't count on seeing William Shatner just yet.

They certainly found a somewhat unknown actor to play Kirk. But Karl Urban? Eomer is going to play Bones???

I think Chris Pine is a good choice. The others? Odd casting. But with the right makeup and mannerisms, maybe they can pull it off?

This is looking good. I think all of these castings are promising. For example, compare these shots of John Cho and George Takei. I think Cho does look somewhat like a young Sulu. And Chris Pine really looks like a twenty-something Kirk.

Crossing my fingers the story is worth all the fuss.

I hear everyone's trepidation having grown up the son of Trekkie (Ya, this was before they went with Trekkers). There's been plenty of remake flops and others that were brilliant. Before we throw in the towel lets see how things some together and how the cast looks. I'm not much up on John Cho but can totally see Pegg as Scotty. I'm looking forward to this!

Yeah, Simon Pegg rocks, no problem seeing him as Scotty. The others I can only judge by appearance since I don't know their work... but really, appearance is the lighter half of the equation isn't it? Part of the point of rebooting Star Trek is to finally get something new out of it -- at least I hope so. Personally I don't mind however much they veer "off-canon" if they revive some spirit of newness and unexplored potential similar to the original series.
